The Punjab government has approved the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, a welfare scheme providing INR 1,000 per month to eligible women and INR 1,500 to women from Scheduled Castes. It covers over 97% of women in the state. Women aged 18 and above with Aadhaar and voter ID can receive the benefits through direct transfer. The state has allocated INR 9,300 crore for the scheme. Cabinet decisions also include reforms for converting mortgaged industrial plots to freehold and amendments to improve infrastructure management in industrial areas.
The Punjab cabinet, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has approved the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, a financial assistance scheme for women across the state. Under this initiative, women aged 18 and above will receive INR 1,000 monthly, while women belonging to Scheduled Castes will get INR 1,500 every month. The scheme is expected to benefit more than 97% of women in Punjab, aiming to improve their financial security and participation in the economy.
Eligibility requires women to be registered voters in Punjab, hold a valid Aadhaar card showing state residency, and possess a voter ID. The benefits will be transferred directly into beneficiaries bank accounts via direct benefit transfer. There is no limit to the number of eligible women per family. Women already receiving other social security pensions will continue to get them alongside this new assistance.
The government has allocated INR 9,300 crore for the scheme in the 2026-27 state budget. Registration will begin from Baisakhi on April 13, and implementation is scheduled to start from April 1. Officials have indicated that outreach efforts will include support for completing documentation, activating bank accounts, and registering efficiently, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The scheme also aligns with the government's earlier promises to strengthen social welfare support for women.
In the same cabinet meeting, ministers approved changes to the industrial plot policy. Leasehold plots and sheds mortgaged with banks or financial institutions can now be converted to freehold if the concerned bank provides a no-objection certificate and other conditions are met. A conversion fee of 5% will apply where the title documents do not mention clauses regarding unearned increase. These changes are expected to make land transactions simpler for businesses and reduce procedural hurdles.
Further, the cabinet sanctioned amendments to the Punjab Common Infrastructure (Regulation and Maintenance) Act, 2012 to improve the functioning of special purpose vehicles (SPVs) responsible for maintaining industrial infrastructure. These amendments aim to enhance transparency, strengthen financial sustainability, and ensure better management of industrial areas, ultimately supporting business operations and attracting investment.
