The Public Works Department (PWD) is in the process of planning a convention centre in Chennai, following an announcement by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. They are currently working to appoint a consultant from the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board to create a detailed plan for the various parts of the centre, which will be located next to Dakshina Chitra on the East Coast Road in Muttukadu. The goal is to transform Chennai into a top destination for large-scale events.

They have chosen a site covering about 30 acres of land for this international convention centre, which will be named after former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as part of his centenary celebrations. The site is currently owned by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, and a portion of it, approximately 20 acres, has been used as a casting yard by CMRL, according to a recent government directive. The department will need to acquire an additional 6.57 acres of land to proceed with the project.

The plan is to develop a top-notch facility capable of hosting conferences, meetings, performances, exhibitions, and other events. The consultant's role will involve assessing various aspects like seating capacity, hotels, landscaping, and parking spaces. They will also need to consider market demands to determine the final project scope.

Additionally, the consultant will recommend how to carry out the various components of the project. The project work which is expected to become another cultural landmark in the city, is scheduled to commence within three months.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is a crucial governmental agency responsible for the planning, development, maintenance, and management of public infrastructure and facilities within a jurisdiction. This department plays a pivotal role in ensuring that essential public services and infrastructure are in place to support the well-being and functionality of communities.
