Synopsis

The Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the launch of a major greenfield aviation project in the National Capital Region. Developed at an investment of INR 11,200 crore, the airport will initially handle 12 million passengers annually, with planned expansion to 70 million capacity. Operated by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, the project is expected to ease congestion at Delhi's existing airport and strengthen regional connectivity. The facility includes cargo infrastructure, logistics zones, and a dedicated maintenance hub, positioning it as a key infrastructure addition to the region.

The Noida International Airport (NIA), located in Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, is set to be inaugurated in the past week by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the commencement of Phase I operations for one of India's largest greenfield airport projects aimed at strengthening aviation capacity in the National Capital Region.

Developed at an investment of approximately INR 11,200 crore, the airport will initially have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. Once completed across four phases, the total passenger handling capacity is planned to reach 70 million, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in the country. The airport will operate under the code DXN and is being managed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, under a public-private partnership model.

The first phase includes a 3,900-metre runway designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft, supported by advanced navigation systems such as the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and aeronautical ground lighting, enabling round-the-clock, all-weather operations. The airport has also been equipped with parking stands for multiple aircraft categories and firefighting systems compliant with international standards.

The project, which received an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation earlier this month, is expected to function alongside Delhi's existing Indira Gandhi International Airport as part of an integrated aviation network. Officials indicated that the addition of NIA will help decongest the existing airport while expanding passenger and cargo handling capacity in the region.

Beyond passenger operations, the airport has been planned with a dedicated cargo ecosystem, including an integrated cargo terminal, logistics zones, and a multi-modal freight hub. The cargo facility is designed to handle over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, with the potential to scale up to approximately 18 lakh metric tonnes. A 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility is also part of the development.

Connectivity infrastructure has been integrated into the project, with the airport linked to the Yamuna Expressway, providing access to Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi, Gurugram, and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh. The project is expected to support movement of passengers and goods across the region through improved road connectivity.

Security arrangements for the inauguration include a multi-layered deployment, with around 5,000 personnel assigned to manage the event and ensure operational readiness.

The development of Noida International Airport reflects a broader focus on expanding aviation infrastructure to support economic activity, logistics, and regional connectivity. With increasing passenger demand and capacity constraints at existing airports, the addition of a second major airport in the NCR is expected to strengthen the region's position within India's aviation network while supporting associated real estate and infrastructure development corridors.
