Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a water management contract valued between INR 1,000 crore and INR 2,500 crore from the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board to develop a 24x7 water supply system in South-East Guwahati. The project involves end-to-end execution, including intake systems, treatment facilities, reservoirs, pumping infrastructure and a city-wide distribution network with household connections. It also includes deployment of a SCADA-based monitoring system and a five-year operation and maintenance component. The project is aimed at improving the reliability and continuity of urban water supply in Assam's largest city, while strengthening L&T's presence in the northeastern infrastructure segment.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded a water management project by the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board in Assam, with the contract valued in the range of INR 1,000 crore to INR 2,500 crore, aimed at establishing a continuous 24x7 water supply system for households in South-East Guwahati, according to the company's recent disclosure.
The project has been classified as a significant order under L&T's internal categorisation, which includes contracts within the INR 1,000 crore to INR 2,500 crore range. It will be executed by the company's Water & Effluent Treatment (WET) business vertical, which focuses on urban and industrial water infrastructure projects across India and international markets.
The scope of work covers the design, supply, installation, construction, testing and commissioning of multiple components critical to a city-scale water supply system. These include a barge-mounted intake system, raw water rising mains, a water treatment plant, service reservoirs, booster pumping stations and a distribution network extending to household-level connections. The integrated nature of the project reflects a design-build-operate model aimed at ensuring end-to-end execution and system reliability.
As part of the contract, L&T will deploy a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to enable real-time monitoring and performance management of the water supply network. The company will also undertake operation and maintenance of the infrastructure for a period of five years after commissioning, ensuring continuity in service delivery and system upkeep.
The project is intended to provide safe and uninterrupted water supply to households in South-East Guwahati, addressing existing gaps in reliability and distribution efficiency within the city's water infrastructure. Officials indicated that the initiative is expected to strengthen urban service delivery while supporting planned growth in the region.
For L&T, the contract adds to its order book and expands its footprint in India's northeast, where infrastructure development has been gaining traction across sectors including water, transport and urban services. The company stated that the order reinforces its focus on delivering integrated and efficient water solutions while supporting urban infrastructure development in emerging regions.
The award also reflects a broader push by state and local authorities to upgrade urban water systems through large-scale engineering, procurement and construction contracts, with an emphasis on continuous supply, monitoring technologies and long-term operational frameworks.
