State Energy and Urban Development Minister AK Sharma stated that the initiative is aligned with the government's plan to develop cities as solar hubs. He noted that Gorakhpur is being actively developed as a solar city, and the approval for the floating solar plant over the water body at Chilua Tal supports this objective. The concept of floating solar projects is being adopted to utilise water surfaces efficiently while conserving land resources.
The project will be executed by Coal India Limited, which has been assigned responsibility for setting up the 20 MW floating solar facility. Around 80 acres of land have been identified and handed over by the district administration to facilitate the project's development and associated infrastructure. Officials indicated that the overall project cost is currently under assessment, and detailed financial estimates are yet to be finalised.
The minister also highlighted that Ayodhya has already been designated as the first solar city in the state. Following this, efforts are underway to develop 16 additional municipal corporations as solar-enabled cities. These initiatives are part of a structured approach to expand solar adoption at the urban level and improve energy sustainability across multiple regions.
Uttar Pradesh has previously implemented floating solar projects in other locations, including a 20 MW plant in Auraiya and an 11 MW facility in Khurja in Bulandshahr district.
