Synopsis

IHG Hotels & Resorts has entered into a management agreement with Harisons Hotels & Resorts to develop a 150-key Crowne Plaza Resort in Sohna, located in the National Capital Region. The project is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2029 and is positioned to cater to both leisure and corporate demand in an emerging hospitality corridor. Sohna has been identified as a growth location due to increasing demand from weddings, social events and expanding business activity. IHG currently operates 51 hotels across six brands in India and has a pipeline of 89 additional properties expected to be launched over the next three to five years, reflecting continued expansion in the domestic hospitality sector.

IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a management agreement in the past week with Harisons Hotels & Resorts to develop a 150-key Crowne Plaza Resort in Sohna, within the National Capital Region, with operations scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2029. The development marks an expansion of IHG's premium portfolio in northern India, targeting both leisure and business segments.


The project will be developed under the Crowne Plaza brand, which is positioned within the upper upscale segment of the hospitality market. The proposed resort is expected to cater to a mix of demand drivers, including destination weddings, social gatherings and corporate events, reflecting the evolving profile of Sohna as a hospitality and leisure destination.

A senior executive at IHG indicated that Sohna has emerged as a high-potential micro-market within the NCR, supported by sustained demand for large-format social events and growing corporate activity in the surrounding region. The executive further noted that the location aligns with the positioning of the Crowne Plaza brand, which focuses on blending business and leisure travel requirements.

The development is part of IHG's broader expansion strategy in India, where the company continues to scale its presence across multiple segments. At present, IHG operates 51 hotels across six brands in the country, spanning luxury, premium and mid-scale categories. In addition, the company has a pipeline of 89 hotels that are expected to be launched over the next three to five years, indicating sustained investment in the Indian hospitality sector.

Sohna, located to the south of Gurugram, has seen increasing real estate and infrastructure activity in recent years. Its proximity to Gurugram's corporate hubs, combined with relatively lower land costs and availability of larger land parcels, has attracted hospitality and residential developments. The area is also witnessing improved connectivity through road infrastructure linking it to key parts of the NCR.

The proposed resort is expected to leverage these locational advantages, particularly in catering to large-format events such as weddings and conferences that require expansive venues and integrated hospitality services. Such developments typically include banquet facilities, recreational amenities and accommodation tailored to both leisure and corporate guests.

The agreement with Harisons Hotels & Resorts reflects a management contract model commonly adopted in the hospitality sector, where the brand operator oversees operations while the asset owner undertakes development. This approach allows global operators to expand their footprint while leveraging local partnerships for project execution.

With a defined timeline extending to early 2029, the project adds to the pipeline of hospitality assets under development in the NCR region. The continued entry of branded operators into emerging micro-markets such as Sohna indicates a shift in demand patterns, where hospitality development is expanding beyond established urban centres to peripheral growth corridors.
