The contract covers design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of lighting systems for metro coaches, along with spares and tools. Execution is scheduled over a 17-month period, with supplies expected to begin later this year. Payment terms include full settlement within 45 days of delivery. The order forms part of ongoing rolling stock and systems procurement for the expanding metro network, which is being developed to enhance urban mobility capacity across Chennai.
Airfloa Rail Technology has secured a contract valued at INR 22.91 crore from BEML Ltd in the past week for supply of systems associated with Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited project, as part of ongoing procurement for rolling stock components in Chennai's expanding urban rail network.
The order involves the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of lighting systems for metro rail coaches. The scope also includes provision of comprehensive maintenance contract (CMC) spares and specialised tools required for installation and upkeep of the systems. The contract has been awarded as part of broader supply arrangements tied to metro coach manufacturing for the Phase II expansion.
Under the agreed timeline, the company is expected to commence supplies from November this year, with the execution period set at 17 months from the start date. The contract specifies that inspection of supplied components will be conducted at BEML's facilities in line with procurement requirements, ensuring adherence to technical standards and quality parameters defined for metro rolling stock systems.
Payment terms outlined in the agreement provide for 100 per cent settlement within 45 days of delivery of the respective supplies, reflecting standard contractual structures followed in metro procurement contracts. The inclusion of testing and commissioning within the scope indicates that the vendor will be responsible not only for manufacturing but also for integration of systems into operational train sets.
The contract is part of the wider Phase II expansion of the Chennai Metro network, which is currently under construction with multiple corridors being developed to extend rapid transit connectivity across the city. The project includes new lines, additional stations and procurement of rolling stock, with contracts being awarded across segments such as civil works, signalling, power systems and train components.
BEML, as a rolling stock manufacturer, is responsible for supplying metro train sets under Phase II, with multiple vendors engaged for specialised subsystems such as lighting, braking and electrical components. The award to Airfloa Rail reflects the layered procurement approach typically adopted in metro projects, where system integration relies on multiple contractors supplying specific equipment.
The continued awarding of component-level contracts highlights the progress of Phase II implementation, where rolling stock manufacturing and system integration activities are advancing alongside civil construction. With execution timelines extending into the next phase of project delivery, such contracts are expected to support commissioning schedules and operational readiness of upcoming corridors.
