Residents and activists in Mumbai have raised concerns over inadequate street lighting at Mahim Beach, especially around the Reti Bunder stretch. Several streetlights in the area are reported to be non-functional, leaving large sections poorly illuminated during evening and night hours. This has led to repeated appeals to civic authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, to carry out repairs and improve lighting. The issue highlights gaps in basic urban maintenance that directly affect public safety in frequently visited public spaces.
Concerns have been raised by residents and activists regarding poor illumination at Mahim Beach, particularly along the Reti Bunder stretch, where multiple streetlights are reportedly not functioning. Locals have stated that the situation has persisted due to delays in maintenance and repair of streetlights. In many sections, broken or non-operational lights have not been replaced or fixed in a timely manner, leading to uneven and insufficient lighting across the area. This has made movement along certain parts of the beach less safe, especially for pedestrians.
Activists and community members have approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, requesting immediate action to repair existing streetlights and install additional lighting where required. They have pointed out that better illumination is necessary to ensure safety for regular visitors, including families and individuals who use the beach for walking and recreation.
The concern also extends to the overall maintenance of public infrastructure in the area. Mahim beach is a well-used public space, and consistent upkeep of basic facilities such as lighting is considered essential for safe public access. Residents have highlighted that the absence of adequate lighting increases risks during low-visibility hours and creates discomfort among visitors.
At present, the issue remains unresolved, with expectations that the civic body and departments will take corrective steps. Regular monitoring, timely repairs, and improved coordination between agencies responsible for electricity and maintenance are seen as key measures to address the problem and restore adequate lighting across the stretch.
