The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a set of road expansion projects in Vijayawada with a total investment of approximately INR 105 crore, aimed at improving connectivity and addressing traffic congestion in the city's peripheral zones. Announced in the past week, the works involve the widening and development of three key stretches, including Ballemvari Street linking Poranki and Nidamanuru, the Auto Nagar Murali Nagar Road, and a connecting stretch up to Nidamanuru Junction. The projects are part of a broader urban infrastructure push to support the city's expansion and improve access to residential and industrial areas. Officials indicated that the upgrades are intended to streamline traffic movement and strengthen linkages between key growth corridors in the region.
The Andhra Pradesh government has commenced road expansion works worth around INR 105 crore in Vijayawada in the past week, with Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana laying the foundation stone for three master plan road projects aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity in the city's peripheral areas.
The projects involve the widening and development of key stretches including Ballemvari Street connecting Poranki to Nidamanuru Road, the Auto Nagar Murali Nagar Road, and the stretch from Ballemvari Street to Nidamanuru Junction. These corridors are located in zones that have witnessed increasing vehicular movement due to residential expansion and proximity to industrial areas such as Auto Nagar.
Officials indicated that the road works have been planned to address rising traffic congestion, particularly in the outskirts of Vijayawada where urban growth has outpaced infrastructure upgrades. The selected stretches serve as important connectors between local residential clusters and larger arterial routes, making them critical for daily commuting as well as goods movement.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort by the state government to strengthen urban infrastructure in Vijayawada as it prepares for long-term expansion. Authorities have stated that improving road capacity and connectivity remains a priority, especially in areas that link to industrial zones and emerging residential pockets.
During the project announcement, the minister indicated that the government is working towards enhancing urban infrastructure across key cities, including Vijayawada, with a focus on transport networks, drainage systems, and basic civic amenities. The emphasis on road development is aligned with efforts to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and support planned urban growth.
The projects are also expected to complement other ongoing road and infrastructure initiatives in the city, including programmes aimed at upgrading internal roads, improving drainage systems, and enhancing pedestrian infrastructure. Vijayawada has been witnessing sustained infrastructure investments in recent months, reflecting the need to address congestion and support expansion in surrounding areas.
Once completed, the widened corridors are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time across key routes, and enhance accessibility to residential and industrial zones. The development is likely to strengthen intra-city connectivity, particularly in areas that currently face bottlenecks due to narrow carriageways and increasing vehicle density.
The road expansion initiative underscores a continued focus on upgrading urban transport infrastructure in tier-II cities, where rapid population growth and spatial expansion are placing pressure on existing road networks.
