Matrix Geo Solutions has secured a contract valued at approximately INR 3.07 crore from North Western Railway to deploy drone-based monitoring systems for a railway infrastructure project. Announced in the past week, the mandate covers the 271.97-km Luni Samdari Bhildi doubling corridor spanning parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, with execution scheduled over 30 months. The company will use UAV-enabled aerial surveys and geo-tagged data capture to monitor construction progress across stages such as earthwork, track laying and bridge development. The initiative reflects increasing adoption of geospatial technologies in infrastructure execution, aimed at improving oversight, reducing reliance on manual inspections and enhancing coordination among project stakeholders.
Matrix Geo Solutions has been awarded a contract worth around INR 3.07 crore by North Western Railway in the past week to provide drone-based monitoring services for the Luni Samdari Bhildi railway doubling project, covering a 271.97-km corridor across Rajasthan and Gujarat, with execution planned over a 30-month period.
Under the agreement, the company will deploy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based systems to track construction progress across the alignment. The monitoring programme will involve monthly aerial surveys using drones equipped with high-resolution cameras, capturing 4K geo-tagged video data integrated with GPS-based metadata to enable detailed mapping of the project corridor.
The collected data will be processed to assess construction activity and detect changes over time, covering key stages such as earthwork, ballast laying, rail installation and bridge construction. This approach is intended to provide a continuous and structured view of project progress, enabling better coordination between executing agencies and project stakeholders.
Officials indicated that the use of drone-led monitoring is expected to reduce the need for frequent physical site inspections by senior authorities by nearly 50 per cent, while also shortening reporting timelines by approximately 25 per cent. The system is designed to offer near real-time visibility into construction progress, supporting faster decision-making and improved project management.
The contract forms part of a broader trend of integrating geospatial technologies into large-scale infrastructure projects, where continuous monitoring and data-driven oversight are becoming increasingly critical. Railway infrastructure, particularly long linear projects such as track doubling, requires coordinated execution across multiple segments, making remote monitoring tools more relevant for tracking progress and identifying execution gaps.
Company officials indicated that the deployment would enhance transparency in project execution by providing consistent and verifiable data on construction milestones. The use of UAV-based systems also allows for systematic documentation of progress, which can be used for performance tracking and compliance purposes.
The Luni Samdari Bhildi project is part of ongoing efforts by Indian Railways to increase network capacity and improve operational efficiency through track doubling initiatives. Such projects are aimed at easing congestion on existing routes, reducing transit times and supporting higher freight and passenger movement across key corridors.
The adoption of drone-based monitoring in this project reflects a growing shift towards technology-enabled infrastructure management, with agencies increasingly relying on digital tools to improve execution efficiency and oversight in complex construction environments.
