Land acquisition has begun for the proposed East West Dedicated Freight Corridor, marking progress in India's plan to expand its freight rail network. The corridor will connect Dankuni in West Bengal to Palghar in Maharashtra, covering key industrial regions. Officials indicated that coordination with state governments is ongoing to support land acquisition and alignment finalisation. The project follows the development of the Eastern and Western corridors and is aimed at improving freight movement efficiency, reducing congestion on passenger routes, and lowering logistics costs across the country.
Land acquisition has commenced for the East West Dedicated Freight Corridor, with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) initiating groundwork for the project. The proposed corridor will run for around 2,000 km, linking Dankuni in West Bengal to Palghar in Maharashtra, and is expected to pass through multiple states with strong industrial and mining activity.
A senior DFCCIL official stated that the land acquisition process has started in coordination with state authorities. Discussions with state governments are ongoing to address issues related to alignment, approvals, and compensation, which are critical at this stage. The project is currently in its early phase, with focus on securing land before moving towards construction.
The corridor is part of a larger expansion plan of dedicated freight routes in India. It builds on the progress made by the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors, which have improved freight movement by separating cargo traffic from passenger trains. This separation has helped reduce congestion on existing railway lines and improved turnaround time for goods trains.
The East West corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity between eastern and western India, linking key production centres, ports, and consumption markets. It will also support movement of bulk commodities such as coal, steel, and cement, which are important for industrial activity. The alignment is being planned to ensure better integration with existing rail networks and logistics infrastructure.
Officials indicated that stakeholder consultations will continue as the project progresses, given the scale of land required and the number of states involved. Land acquisition remains one of the most important steps for timely execution, as delays at this stage can impact the overall project timeline.
The proposal for the East West corridor has been under consideration for some time as part of Indian Railways long-term strategy to handle increasing freight demand. Detailed project planning has already been carried out, and the current step signals movement towards implementation.
