The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Forestry and Horticulture University in Gorakhpur, aimed at strengthening environmental education and research. Planned over nearly 50 hectares with an investment of over INR 491 crore, the project has already received an initial allocation of INR 50 crore. The university will offer a wide range of courses in forestry, horticulture, and climate-related fields. It is expected to support biodiversity conservation, improve forest cover, and create employment opportunities while contributing to sustainable agriculture and ecological balance in the state.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Uttar Pradesh Forestry and Horticulture University in Gorakhpur, as per an official statement. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, where the proposal to promulgate the Uttar Pradesh Forestry and Horticulture University Ordinance-2026 was cleared to enable the project.
The university is planned in the Campierganj area, spread across nearly 50 hectares, with an estimated cost of over INR 491 crore. The state government has already earmarked INR 50 crore for the project in the current budget, indicating initial financial backing for the development.
Once operational, the institution will offer BSc, MSc, PhD and diploma programmes across multiple disciplines including forestry, horticulture, wildlife conservation, climate change, natural resource management, agroforestry, fruit science and gardening. The academic structure is designed to address both environmental concerns and agricultural advancements, aligning with the state's focus on sustainable development.
The project is expected to play a role in improving forest cover and strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts in Uttar Pradesh. It will also focus on providing modern technical training to students and farmers, while supporting research in agriculture and environmental sciences. Similar specialised universities in India, such as those focused on agriculture and forestry, have contributed to region-specific research and skill development, which this institution aims to replicate.
Officials indicated that the university will be the fifth higher education institution in Gorakhpur, further strengthening the city's academic infrastructure. The addition is expected to support regional development goals, particularly in areas related to green growth, food security and ecological sustainability.
Divisional Forest Officer Vikas Yadav stated that the institution is planned to include courses in social forestry and agroforestry, which are likely to create employment and skill development opportunities for local youth. He further indicated that preparations for the foundation-laying ceremony will be expedited following the Cabinet's approval, suggesting that the project may move into its next phase soon.
