AERA cuts airport landing and parking charges by 25% for domestic flights

Synopsis

The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has reduced landing and parking charges by 25% at major airports across India, offering relief to airlines. The decision, implemented in the past week, applies to all domestic flights and will remain in effect for three months. The move follows a directive from the government in response to the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has impacted airline operations and costs. The reduction is expected to ease financial pressure on carriers and support stability in domestic aviation operations during this period of uncertainty.

The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority has announced a 25% reduction in landing and parking charges at major airports, providing relief to airlines operating domestic routes. The revised tariff has been implemented with immediate effect and will remain applicable for a period of three months.

These charges, which form part of the aeronautical tariff structure, are levied on airlines for the use of airport infrastructure such as runways and parking bays. The reduction is expected to lower operational costs for carriers at a time when the aviation sector is facing external pressures.

The decision follows directions issued by the central government in light of the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has had a cascading impact on airline operations, including higher fuel costs and longer flight routes due to airspace restrictions. In its order, the regulator stated that it had reviewed the matter and decided to implement the government's directive after due consideration.

AERA further clarified that the reduced tariff would be applicable across all major airports under its jurisdiction and limited to domestic flights during the three-month period. This temporary measure is aimed at stabilising airline operations and ensuring continuity in services without placing additional financial burden on carriers.

In the past, similar regulatory interventions have been introduced during periods of sectoral stress to support airlines and maintain operational efficiency. Industry stakeholders have often highlighted that airport-related charges form a significant portion of airline expenses, especially for short-haul domestic routes.
