Indore's civic authorities have issued a final 48-hour deadline to around 100 commercial buildings to comply with mandatory fire safety regulations, following a city-wide inspection drive. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and district administration identified serious lapses across 337 buildings, with a significant number lacking basic firefighting systems or having non-functional equipment. Property owners have been directed to install and operationalise fire safety infrastructure within the stipulated period or face sealing of premises and legal action. The enforcement follows a broader compliance drive initiated in the past weeks, aimed at addressing safety gaps in high-occupancy structures. The move reflects increasing regulatory scrutiny of building safety standards in urban commercial real estate.
The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and district administration have issued a final 48-hour ultimatum to nearly 100 commercial buildings to comply with fire safety norms, following inspections conducted across the city in the past weeks, with enforcement action set to begin immediately after the deadline in Indore.
The directive targets high-occupancy G+3 commercial buildings identified during a survey of 337 properties across multiple zones, where officials found widespread non-compliance with prescribed fire safety standards. Authorities have asked building owners to install and operationalise mandatory fire prevention systems within the stipulated timeframe, failing which premises may be sealed and penal action initiated under applicable building bylaws.
Inspection findings revealed that 87 buildings did not have any fire safety equipment, while 19 structures had systems in place that were not functional. Notices had already been served to 67 property owners prior to the final warning, indicating continued gaps in adherence despite earlier directions issued by the administration.
Officials indicated that the compliance window follows a 15-day notice period announced as part of a wider enforcement exercise covering multi-storey and G+3 buildings across Indore. The earlier directive required property owners to ensure operational firefighting systems, including extinguishers, sprinklers, hydrants, and clearly marked emergency exits, with inspections carried out by designated teams.
Collector Shivam Verma conveyed that the grace period for voluntary compliance had concluded and that strict enforcement measures, including sealing of non-compliant properties, would be implemented within days. The IMC administration also indicated that legal provisions under municipal bylaws would be invoked against violators who fail to meet the requirements within the final deadline.
In parallel with enforcement action, the IMC fire department and district authorities have initiated training sessions and fire safety drills at key public and commercial locations. These exercises focus on evacuation protocols, use of firefighting equipment, and emergency preparedness, particularly in view of increased fire risks during the summer period.
The current crackdown is part of a broader regulatory response following recent fire incidents in the city, which exposed deficiencies in safety infrastructure and compliance levels. Authorities have also highlighted concerns over unauthorised alterations in buildings that obstruct ventilation and emergency access routes, further increasing risk during fire-related emergencies.
The enforcement drive underscores a tightening of compliance requirements in urban real estate, with municipal bodies placing greater emphasis on operational safety standards in commercial assets. For property owners and occupiers, adherence to fire safety norms is increasingly being treated as a non-negotiable regulatory requirement, particularly in high-density and high-footfall developments.
