The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has initiated the development of an elevated pedestrian walkway at Silk Board Junction in Bengaluru to connect the operational Yellow Line with the under-construction Blue Line. The project, estimated at around INR 59 crore, will span approximately 250 metres and include the city's first travelator within the metro network. A tender has been floated for civil, structural, and architectural works, with construction expected to take about nine months after contract award. The intervention addresses the absence of a direct interchange between the two corridors and is intended to streamline commuter movement across one of the city's busiest transit nodes along the Outer Ring Road.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has floated a tender in the past week for the construction of an elevated pedestrian walkway at Silk Board Junction in Bengaluru, aimed at connecting the operational Yellow Line with the upcoming Blue Line, addressing a key interchange gap in the city's metro network.
The proposed structure, estimated to cost around INR 59 crore, will extend approximately 250 metres between the two metro stations, which are currently separated despite being part of the same interchange hub. The project will include civil, structural, and architectural works, along with the installation of a travelator a moving pedestrian system commonly used in airports marking its first introduction within the city's metro infrastructure.
The Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra, has been operational since last year and serves key residential and industrial corridors in south Bengaluru. In contrast, the Blue Line, running along the Outer Ring Road and linking Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport, is under construction and is expected to be completed in phases over the next two years.
Unlike major interchange stations such as Majestic or MG Road, the Silk Board station has not been designed with an integrated internal transfer between lines. As a result, commuters would otherwise need to exit one station and access the other through surface-level routes. The elevated walkway is being developed to provide a seamless and grade-separated connection, particularly important given the high traffic congestion at Silk Board Junction.
Tender details indicate that the construction period has been set at approximately nine months from the date of award. The bidding process is currently underway, with submission timelines extending into early May, following which the contractor will be finalised and work initiated.
The project also includes architectural enhancements aimed at improving commuter experience, suggesting a focus not only on functional connectivity but also on usability and design within the transit environment. Officials have indicated that land acquisition for the project is in progress, which is a prerequisite for commencing on-ground work.
The Silk Board junction is one of Bengaluru's most congested traffic nodes, connecting major IT corridors such as Electronic City and the Outer Ring Road. The addition of the elevated walkway is expected to facilitate smoother passenger interchange between metro corridors without adding pressure on already strained road infrastructure.
This development forms part of broader efforts to enhance multimodal integration within Bengaluru's expanding metro network, particularly in high-density employment corridors. As metro connectivity continues to expand across the city, infrastructure interventions such as dedicated pedestrian links are being incorporated to address last-mile connectivity and interchange efficiency challenges.
