Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has revised metro timetables across key corridors to improve travel efficiency and network integration. The changes come with the launch of Metro Line 9, connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon, and Metro Line 2B Phase 1, linking Mandale to Diamond Garden. These additions expand connectivity to Thane and Harbour Line areas. The updated schedules focus on better frequency, predictable services, and corridor-wise operations. Integration between Line 7 and Line 9 enables direct travel across suburban stretches, while Line 2A now runs independently to improve reliability.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has introduced revised and simplified metro timetables across major corridors, with the changes set to take effect from April 8. The move aligns with the commencement of operations on Metro Line 9, connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon, and Metro Line 2B Phase 1 between Mandale and Diamond Garden, marking further expansion of Mumbai's metro network.

The launch of Metro Line 9 is notable as it extends metro services into Thane district for the first time, while Metro Line 2B improves connectivity in key Harbour Line areas such as Chembur. These additions are expected to strengthen east-west and suburban travel links across the city.

With the revised operations, Metro Line 2A and Metro Line 7 will now function as separate corridors. At the same time, Line 7 has been integrated with Line 9, allowing direct connectivity from Andheri East to Kashigaon without the need for interchange. This restructuring has been planned to reduce operational overlap and improve efficiency across the network.

Metro Line 2A, running between Andheri West and Dahisar East, will operate as a standalone corridor with a focus on smoother and more reliable services. Trains will run every six minutes during peak hours and every eight to ten minutes during non-peak hours. The corridor will handle up to 289 trips on weekdays, with slightly lower frequency over weekends.

The integrated Line 7 and Line 9 corridor, connecting Gundavali to Kashigaon, spans 19.79 km and will offer direct suburban connectivity. Peak-hour frequency will be maintained at under six minutes, with non-peak intervals ranging between eight and ten minutes. The corridor is expected to handle over 270 trips on weekdays, ensuring high service availability.

Metro Line 2B Phase 1, covering a 5.38 km stretch between Mandale and N.G. Acharya Udyan at Diamond Garden, introduces metro access to Harbour Line zones. The corridor will operate at an average frequency of around nine minutes and 30 seconds, with over 200 trips scheduled daily. This is expected to ease pressure on existing suburban rail and road networks in eastern Mumbai.

Commuters will continue to have seamless interchange at Dahisar station between Lines 2A and 7 without exiting the paid area, ensuring smooth transfers despite operational separation of the corridors.

The revised timetable structure focuses on reducing waiting time, improving service predictability, and enhancing overall commuter experience. Increased frequency and better alignment with travel patterns are expected to support daily ridership across western suburbs and extended regions.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee stated that the operational restructuring of Metro Lines 2A and 7, along with the introduction of Lines 9 and 2B, marked a key milestone in the city's metro expansion. He added that the integration of Line 7 with Line 9 enables direct suburban connectivity, while Line 2B improves access to Harbour Line areas. He further noted that these changes are aimed at reducing congestion, improving passenger distribution, and enhancing overall efficiency. He also indicated that the revised schedules are designed to improve reliability and ease of travel, moving the network closer to the long-term vision of a fully integrated 337 km metro system.
