The Telangana government has proposed a multi-lane underpass beneath Begumpet Airport to improve connectivity and reduce congestion in Hyderabad. The project, part of an elevated corridor linking Suchitra Junction and Paradise Circle, has received in-principle approval from the Airports Authority of India. Designed to pass below the airport runway, the plan is considered a first-of-its-kind in India. It forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen urban mobility through integrated road infrastructure and better traffic management across key city corridors.
The Telangana government has proposed the construction of a multi-lane underpass tunnel beneath Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad to improve traffic movement across one of the city's busy corridors. The tunnel is part of a larger elevated corridor project planned between Suchitra Junction and Paradise Circle, aimed at easing congestion and reducing travel time for daily commuters.
The proposal has received in-principle approval from the Airports Authority of India, allowing the state government to proceed with detailed studies and design planning. The underpass is planned to run beneath the airport runway, making it a technically complex project due to the presence of active aviation operations. Officials indicated that the design would ensure no disruption to airport activities while improving road connectivity below.
The project is being seen as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, as very few road tunnels in India pass directly under operational airstrips. The state government has been exploring this solution to address increasing traffic pressure in central parts of Hyderabad, where road expansion options are limited due to dense development.
Begumpet Airport, which earlier handled commercial flights before operations shifted to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, is currently used for training and private aviation. This makes coordination with aviation authorities important, especially for safety clearances and construction planning beneath the runway.
The idea for the underpass was first proposed as part of a broader infrastructure plan to strengthen Hyderabad's transport network. Since then, the government has been focusing on combining multiple solutions such as flyovers, underpasses and elevated corridors to create a more connected road system. The Suchitra Paradise corridor is considered a key link as it connects residential areas in the north with commercial and defence zones in Secunderabad.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy indicated that the objective is to improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks without relying only on surface-level road expansion. He stated that such projects are part of a long-term approach to manage urban growth and ensure smoother connectivity across major junctions.
In addition to this proposal, the state has been working on expanding metro connectivity and improving last-mile access in several parts of the city. Multiple road infrastructure upgrades are also underway to support increasing vehicle numbers and changing travel patterns.
