Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is moving forward with its smart parking project, nearly six years after it was first proposed. The initiative aims to consolidate all public and private parking spaces into a single digital platform accessible via a mobile app or web portal, allowing motorists to view and reserve parking slots in advance. With over 350 on street and 26 off street parking locations, the system also plans to include residential associations spaces during daytime. The project has an initial budget of INR 3 crore and is expected to ease parking shortages and traffic congestion across Mumbai.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is advancing its long pending smart parking project, which was first proposed in 2020. Officials have confirmed that the civic body is in the final stage of selecting a consultant to develop a centralised digital dashboard listing all parking spaces in the city. This platform will be available to citizens through a mobile application or web portal, allowing users to view available spaces and reserve slots in advance. The standing committee of the BMC recently approved the proposal, and the initial budget allocated for the project is INR 3 crore.

Currently, the BMC manages more than 350 on street parking sites, including areas around traffic islands, lanes, and bylanes, along with 26 off street parking lots in public and private institutions. With vehicle numbers steadily rising, Mumbai faces a critical shortage of parking spaces, compounded by high land scarcity. Government data shows that the city now has approximately 2,300 cars per kilometre of road, a sharp increase from 1,840 cars in 2019 and 1,150 cars in 2014. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) recorded 3.02 lakh new vehicle registrations in 2025, up 8.24% from the previous year, reflecting the rapid growth in urban mobility needs.

The digital dashboard will consolidate information from BMC's existing parking facilities and private spaces, including shopping malls and commercial plazas. Residential associations will also be encouraged to share their parking lots during the daytime. Motorists will be able to see available slots at their destination and book a preferred parking space online, much like reserving seats in a cinema. Officials explained that the platform would also suggest alternatives such as public transport if parking spaces run out, which could further help reduce congestion in busy areas.

The BMC plans to develop the dashboard within the next year, with a pilot project to be launched in five wards two in the western suburbs, two in the island city, and one in the eastern suburbs. Civic authorities expect this system to improve the efficiency of parking management, reduce time spent searching for parking, and ease traffic flow across the city. The project is also seen as a step toward integrating smart technology into urban mobility solutions.
