Indian Railways transported 1,670 million tonnes of cargo in the recently concluded financial year, achieving a 3.25% rise over the previous year. Growth was driven primarily by fertilisers, pig iron, and finished steel, along with increased shipments of iron ore and cement. The number of wagons handled also increased by 4.56%, reflecting improved operational efficiency and capacity. Several zones, including South Western, North Central, East Coast, and West Central Railways, reported strong double-digit growth. The performance underscores railways crucial role in supporting industrial activity and bulk commodity logistics across India.
Indian Railways set a new milestone in freight transport by moving 1,670 million tonnes of cargo in the financial year that ended recently. This represents a 3.25% increase compared with the previous year, highlighting the continued growth in rail-based freight movement. The Railway Ministry noted that this performance reflects improvements in operational efficiency, expansion of capacity, and the growing reliance of key economic sectors on rail transport.
The ministry reported that the number of wagons handled rose by 4.56%, from approximately 279.12 million in 2024-25 to about 291.86 million in 2025-26. It emphasized that steady growth in freight loading points to increasing demand for cost-effective and reliable logistics solutions, establishing rail as the preferred mode for bulk commodity transport.
Freight growth was led by crucial sectors. Fertilisers transport grew by 13.49%, while pig iron and finished steel shipments rose by 13.11%. Infrastructure-related commodities also contributed significantly, with iron ore shipments increasing by 6.74% to 190.12 million tonnes and cement loading rising by 4.74% to 157.17 million tonnes, reflecting ongoing construction and development activity nationwide.
Region-wise, the growth was broad-based. South Western Railway recorded the highest increase at 14.89%, followed by North Central Railway (12.62%), East Coast Railway (10.42%), and West Central Railway (10.06%). These gains indicate strong regional industrial demand and efficient cargo handling across zones.
While the overall performance surpassed previous records, some freight categories displayed mixed trends, with minor declines in specific sectors. Nevertheless, the rail freight system continues to serve as a backbone for transporting bulk goods efficiently and supporting industrial supply chains across India.
