Synopsis

The new terminal at Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur is nearing completion and is expected to open soon, significantly increasing passenger handling capacity. Built at a cost of around INR 887 crore, the terminal is designed to support future international operations. Authorities are in discussions with airlines to start international flights. The project is expected to improve connectivity, support tourism growth, and strengthen the local economy, while also creating positive momentum for real estate and hospitality demand in the region.

The new terminal at Maharana Pratap Airport is in the final stages of completion and is likely to become operational soon. This development is aimed at improving infrastructure and handling the growing number of passengers travelling to and from Udaipur.

The terminal has been developed over an area of around 40,000 square metres at an estimated cost of nearly INR 887 crore. Once operational, it will be able to handle about 2,050 passengers during peak hours. The facility will include around 42 check-in counters, expanded waiting areas, better baggage handling systems, and upgraded passenger amenities to improve overall airport operations.

Officials have indicated that discussions are ongoing with multiple airlines regarding the introduction of international flight services from Udaipur. While approvals and final agreements are still under process, the airport has already been granted international status earlier, and the new terminal has been designed keeping these operations in mind. Authorities expect that once services begin, routes connecting to regions such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia could be prioritised due to strong travel demand.

Passenger traffic at the airport has been steadily increasing over the past few years, mainly driven by tourism. Udaipur continues to attract both domestic and international visitors, leading to higher demand for direct connectivity. The current terminal has been operating close to its capacity during peak tourist seasons, which made expansion necessary.

The terminal project is part of a wider plan by the Airports Authority of India to upgrade airport infrastructure across tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Along with the terminal building, related works such as apron expansion, runway-side improvements, and supporting infrastructure have also been carried out through multiple tenders in recent months to ensure smooth operations after launch.

With better infrastructure in place, the airport is expected to handle higher passenger volumes more efficiently. Improved air connectivity is likely to support tourism growth, increase hotel occupancy, and encourage more investment in hospitality and second-home developments in and around Udaipur.
