Synopsis

Chhattisgarh has emerged as the top-performing state in rural housing delivery, completing over six lakh homes in FY26. The progress has been driven by the combined implementation of PMAY-G, PM JANMAN Yojana and the state housing scheme. Around 18 lakh houses had been approved earlier, and the government has now ensured coverage of all eligible beneficiaries. The initiative has also supported rural livelihoods through women-led material supply models, mason training, and local employment, making it a broader development effort beyond housing construction.

Chhattisgarh has recorded the highest number of rural houses completed in the country in FY26, with total completions crossing six lakh units. Officials from the state government stated that this marks the highest yearly achievement so far, reflecting faster execution and improved coordination across departments.

The housing push has been supported through the combined implementation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), PM JANMAN Yojana and the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. Better alignment between these schemes has helped reduce delays, streamline fund flow and ensure that construction progresses on time across districts.

As per government data, around 5.87 lakh houses were completed under PMAY-G. In addition, about 13,000 houses were delivered under PM JANMAN Yojana, which focuses on particularly vulnerable tribal groups, while over 10,000 houses were completed under the state-run housing scheme. These combined efforts pushed the overall figure beyond six lakh homes during the financial year.

The state had earlier approved nearly 18 lakh houses as part of its initial cabinet decisions after taking office. Officials indicated that surveys were conducted to identify all eligible beneficiaries, and the government has now ensured that housing support has reached all those who qualified under the schemes. This has helped reduce gaps in rural housing coverage.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that the government's focus has been on ensuring that every eligible rural family has access to a permanent house. He explained that housing plays an important role in providing security, stability and improved living conditions, especially for economically weaker households.

This is also the highest performance recorded by the state since the launch of PMAY-G in 2016. Improved monitoring systems, regular field-level reviews and time-bound targets have played a key role in achieving this scale of delivery within a single financial year.

The initiative has also contributed to rural economic activity. Under the Dealer Didi model, more than 9,000 women associated with self-help groups have been engaged in supplying construction materials. This has created an additional income source at the local level and strengthened women's participation in the housing ecosystem.

Alongside this, over 6,000 masons have been trained to support construction work, including more than 1,200 women masons. The programme has also been linked to rehabilitation efforts, where surrendered extremists have been provided livelihood opportunities through skill-based work in housing construction.

To improve transparency and grievance redressal, a toll-free system has been put in place. Authorities reported receiving over 1,500 complaints and suggestions in recent months, with efforts made to resolve issues quickly. Regular monitoring at the village and block levels has further supported timely completion of houses.

The rural housing drive is aligned with the broader national goal of improving living conditions in villages, with PMAY-G continuing to play a central role in addressing housing shortages across states.
