Synopsis

The Union government has made the process of obtaining permissions for access roads and utility connections along national highways completely digital through the upgraded Rajmarg Pravesh Portal. The platform allows individuals, companies and government agencies to apply online for No Objection Certificates for fuel stations, industries, private properties, wayside amenities and connecting roads. Applications for utilities such as pipelines, optical fibre cables and electricity lines can also be submitted digitally. The system introduces defined timelines, online tracking and reduced paperwork, aiming to bring greater transparency and faster approvals in highway-related infrastructure development.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made the process of obtaining access permissions from national highways fully digital through the upgraded Rajmarg Pravesh Portal. The platform has been introduced to simplify how individuals, companies and government agencies obtain approvals for facilities and connections along highways.

Through the portal, applicants can now seek No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for access roads leading to fuel stations, industries, residential or commercial properties, and other establishments located along national highways. Permissions can also be requested for developing wayside amenities such as rest areas, service facilities and roadside infrastructure that require direct connectivity with highways.

Earlier, applicants had to submit physical documents and approach multiple government offices to obtain approvals. The upgraded digital system allows users to submit applications online, upload documents and monitor the progress of their requests on a single platform. The portal automatically routes applications to the concerned authority for examination and decision.

Officials stated that the system has been designed to create a time-bound approval mechanism. Each stage of the application process has defined timelines so that requests can be processed faster. The portal also enables authorities to track pending proposals and identify delays at different levels, which is expected to improve accountability in the approval system.

Apart from access roads, the platform also provides approvals for utility installations along national highways. Government departments and private entities can apply online for laying water pipelines, gas pipelines, optical fibre cables, electricity transmission lines and similar infrastructure either along or across highway corridors.

The move is expected to benefit businesses that require highway access for logistics facilities, fuel outlets, warehouses and industrial developments. With applications moving online, the need for physical interaction with departments is reduced and documentation becomes easier to manage and verify.

India's national highway network has expanded significantly over the past decade as the government continues to invest in expressways and high-capacity road corridors. Faster approval systems are increasingly important as roadside infrastructure such as fuel stations, logistics parks, warehousing hubs and service facilities grow along major highway routes.

The digitisation of the approval process is part of broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency in the road sector. Similar online systems have been introduced in recent years for project monitoring, tolling systems and contract management across the highway network.
