The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has directed officials to speed up several important road widening works across the Visakhapatnam metropolitan region to strengthen connectivity and ease traffic movement. Metropolitan Commissioner N. Tej Bharath reviewed the progress of multiple projects including the Adavivaram Shonthyam, Veppagunta Pinagadi, and Gambheeram Nerellavalasa Tallavalasa road stretches. During the inspection, officials were instructed to accelerate land acquisition, clear utility obstacles such as electrical poles, and ensure timely compensation or Transferable Development Rights (TDR) certificates for affected landowners. The projects are part of broader infrastructure efforts aimed at improving urban mobility as the city continues to expand.
The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has instructed officials to accelerate several key road widening projects planned across the Visakhapatnam metropolitan region to improve connectivity and ease traffic movement. Metropolitan Commissioner N. Tej Bharath carried out field inspections of important road corridors and reviewed the progress of ongoing works as part of the region's infrastructure development plan.
The inspection covered multiple stretches including the Adavivaram Shonthyam road, the Veppagunta Pinagadi corridor and the Gambheeram Nerellavalasa Tallavalasa stretch. These roads are considered important links connecting the city with rapidly developing suburban areas. Authorities noted that the widening works are expected to support smoother movement of vehicles between residential neighbourhoods, industrial zones and nearby growth centres.
During the review, the commissioner directed departments involved in the projects to ensure that land acquisition processes are completed quickly. Officials were instructed to work closely with the revenue department and the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to avoid administrative delays that could slow down project implementation. The authorities were also asked to resolve pending approvals at the earliest so that construction activities can continue without interruptions.
The commissioner further instructed officials to ensure that property owners affected by the widening works receive compensation without delay. In cases where land is being acquired under the Transferable Development Rights system, authorities were directed to issue TDR certificates promptly. This step is expected to help landowners receive development rights in exchange for the land surrendered for public infrastructure projects.
Utility obstacles along the project corridors were also reviewed during the inspection. The commissioner directed officials to coordinate with power authorities to remove or relocate 11 kV electricity poles that currently fall within the road expansion limits. Clearing such obstacles is necessary to allow road construction and widening work to progress smoothly.
Particular focus was placed on the 3.12 km Veppagunta Pinagadi road stretch. Officials were asked to complete the removal of structures located within the proposed road alignment while simultaneously ensuring that compensation procedures for affected property owners are completed. Authorities stated that completing both tasks together would help avoid delays once physical construction begins.
Engineering officials including Vinay Kumar, Bhavani Shankar and Madhusudana Rao participated in the inspection along with representatives from several departments. Agencies such as the revenue department, rural water supply, APTRANSCO and the municipal corporation were instructed to maintain coordination so that the works can move forward in a structured manner.
The road widening initiatives form part of VMRDA's broader infrastructure plan aimed at strengthening the transport network in the Visakhapatnam region. The metropolitan area has been witnessing steady expansion in recent years, with new residential layouts, industrial developments and commercial centres emerging in surrounding mandals. Improved road infrastructure is considered necessary to support this growth and manage increasing traffic movement.
Several master plan roads have already been identified by VMRDA to connect the city with nearby growth corridors and major transport routes. Upgrading these roads is also expected to provide alternative routes for commuters and reduce pressure on major highways, particularly National Highway-16 which handles heavy traffic passing through the region.
Authorities have also been focusing on improving connectivity between Visakhapatnam city and emerging infrastructure projects in the region, including the upcoming international airport at Bhogapuram. Strengthening road links between the city, surrounding mandals and regional infrastructure projects is expected to support economic activity and improve overall mobility.
VMRDA officials indicated that timely coordination between departments, quick resolution of land issues and removal of utility obstacles will be essential for completing these widening works within planned timelines.
