Residents of Tripunithura in Kochi, Kerala are urging authorities to extend the Seaport Airport Road (SPAP Road) beyond its current terminus to ease persistent traffic bottlenecks, local officials and community representatives said in the past week. The existing four-lane arterial road, designed to connect Kochi Seaport with Cochin International Airport, has significantly reduced transit times since its opening, but its current alignment ends near Puthencruz, forcing vehicles onto narrower local roads that are now struggling under increased traffic volumes. Community groups are calling for the SPAP roadway to be extended towards Thripunithura town centre and major regional junctions, improving last-mile connectivity and decongesting residential streets. Advocates argue that such an extension could better integrate surrounding growth areas into the broader road network, support economic activity and enhance commuter safety. Authorities have acknowledged the concerns and indicated that feasibility assessments are under consideration amid competing infrastructure priorities.

The SPAP Road, a key four-lane arterial corridor linking Kochi Seaport on the western coast to Cochin International Airport in the east, has been widely credited with reducing travel times and facilitating more efficient movement of freight and passenger vehicles since its commissioning. However, its present configuration culminates near Puthencruz, shortly before reaching the heart of Tripunithura, forcing traffic onto undersized local roads that are increasingly overwhelmed by vehicular influx, residents say.
Community groups and local representatives have urged the Kerala Public Works Department and regional planners to consider extending the SPAP Road towards Thripunithura town centre and adjacent nodal points, including key residential clusters, commercial hubs and connectivity nodes. Tripunithura, recognised for its cultural heritage and as a satellite growth zone of Kochi, has witnessed rising traffic volumes driven by urban expansion, new residential developments and patronage of arterial roadways.
Advocates of the extension argue that connecting the SPAP Road directly into Tripunithura's urban grid would distribute traffic more evenly, reduce pressure on local thoroughfares and enhance last-mile transit efficiency for commuters travelling between the port, airport and suburban centres. Such an extension, they contend, could also support local economic activity by improving accessibility to markets, employment centres and social infrastructure while reducing travel times for residents.
Officials said they were aware of the residents concerns and noted that any proposal to extend the SPAP Road would require a detailed feasibility study, land acquisition assessments, and coordination with local bodies and urban development authorities. Challenges cited include right-of-way complexities, environmental clearances and ensuring that the extended alignment minimises disruption to existing communities and sensitive zones.
Transport planners have previously highlighted the importance of strengthening peripheral connectivity in the Kochi metropolitan area, particularly as growth spreads beyond traditional urban cores into surrounding panchayats and suburban pockets. An extension of the SPAP Road could potentially align with broader regional mobility schemes and complement planned infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to junctions, feeder roads and public transport corridors.
Meanwhile, residents continue to press for prioritisation of the extension project, emphasising that enhanced road connectivity is critical to alleviating congestion, improving commuter safety and supporting sustainable urban expansion in one of Kerala's most dynamic suburban regions. Authorities have said consultations are ongoing and that community inputs will inform future planning decisions related to the city's road network.
