Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stopped demolition work in Andheri West's Seven Bungalows area after a large slab fell from the terrace of the Ratan Kunj building, which is being redeveloped. The slab's collapse caused nearby structures to vibrate and created a dust cloud, alarming residents and prompting them to contact the Versova police. Civic authorities said the demolition site lacked proper safety measures. Although no injuries were reported, the incident raised renewed concerns over compliance and monitoring at redevelopment sites in Mumbai, following past accidents in the city.

In Andheri West's Seven Bungalows neighbourhood, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) intervened to halt demolition at the Ratan Kunj building after a heavy slab broke off while workers were removing a water tank from the terrace. The building is under redevelopment, and the incident caused strong vibrations in nearby structures and raised a cloud of dust, which prompted several residents to alert the Versova police.

Residents said the tremors felt like a minor earthquake, making nearby buildings shake and raising fears for personal safety. Many noted that there were no visible safety measures such as barricades, protective nets, or water sprinklers to reduce dust and debris during the demolition. Civic activists highlighted that the lack of these measures made the incident avoidable and exposed surrounding residents to potential risk.

Officials from the BMC's K West ward confirmed that demolition work had been stopped due to violations of safety norms. A team inspected the site and issued notices to the developer for not following proper protocols. The Versova police said they would review the civic report and take necessary action based on any lapses identified at the site.

Although there were no casualties, the episode revived memories of previous accidents in the city, including a fatal case in Jogeshwari East where debris from a redevelopment site caused a young woman's death. Residents and civic groups expressed the need for stricter oversight of demolition activities and better enforcement of safety measures to prevent similar incidents in densely populated areas.

The BMC has emphasized that all redevelopment projects must comply with safety standards, and the civic body is now reviewing other ongoing demolitions in the ward to ensure no further risks to residents.
