Synopsis

Mumbai's Coastal Road (North) and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) are progressing as per schedule, with the BMC projecting completion by 2029 and 2028, respectively. The Coastal Road (North) will run from Versova to Dahisar, and the GMLR will connect Mindspace Malad Junction to Goregaon (E), improving north-south and east-west connectivity. All necessary clearances from environmental, maritime, and legal authorities have been secured. These projects follow the partially inaugurated Coastal Road (South) and aim to streamline travel, reduce congestion, and deliver significant infrastructure milestones ahead of upcoming elections.

Mumbai's two major infrastructure projects, the Coastal Road (North) and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), are progressing on schedule and are expected to be completed well before 2029, according to timelines detailed in the BMC budget for 2026-27. This period also coincides with the upcoming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections, highlighting the importance of these projects in the civic development agenda.

Following the pattern of the Mumbai Coastal Road (South), which was partially inaugurated starting March 2024, months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in May 2024, the civic body plans to complete the Coastal Road (North) by July 2029. The GMLR is scheduled for completion a year earlier, in 2028.

The Coastal Road (North) will extend from the Versova Interchange to the Dahisar Interchange, while an elevated GMLR connector is proposed from the Mindspace Malad Junction on the Coastal Road to the starting point of the GMLR in Goregaon (E). Together, these projects will strengthen links between South Mumbai, the western suburbs, and the northeastern suburbs, including Mulund and Thane, improving both north-south and east-west connectivity in the city.

The BMC confirmed that all required approvals have been obtained for these projects. Permissions from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Mangroves Cell are in place. Additionally, the Bombay High Court has cleared the projects, ensuring legal and environmental compliance.

These infrastructure developments are expected to provide smoother commutes, reduce travel times, and contribute to Mumbai's urban modernization, while also giving the ruling administration visible milestones ahead of elections.
