PWD creates temporary link road near Ajni Bridge to manage underpass traffic congestion

Synopsis

The Public Works Department has constructed a temporary link road near Ajni Bridge in Nagpur to address traffic congestion caused by ongoing underpass work. The link connects the Kriplani Square Ajni Bridge stretch to the Congress Nagar bypass by cutting through the central median. The step follows rising traffic pressure after part of the main carriageway was closed for construction. The underpass forms part of a broader INR 35 crore upgrade that includes six-laning and connectivity to twin cable-stayed bridges. Authorities say the temporary road will provide interim relief while long-term works continue.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has built a temporary link road near Ajni Bridge in Nagpur to reduce traffic congestion resulting from the ongoing underpass construction at the junction. The temporary stretch has been created by cutting through the central median and will connect the Kriplani Square Ajni Bridge road to the bypass leading towards Congress Nagar.

Traffic pressure had increased significantly after a portion of the main road near the bridge was barricaded for underpass and road-widening work. Commuters travelling between Ajni Bridge, Chuna Bhatti Square and Congress Nagar were facing long delays, especially during peak hours. With heavy vehicle movement and continuous construction activity in the area, congestion became frequent and difficult to manage.

The temporary link has been developed following coordination between the PWD and the city traffic police. Officials had earlier assessed diversion options, but the volume of vehicles at this key junction required an immediate physical connectivity solution. The new stretch is expected to help vehicles bypass the closed section and improve movement towards Congress Nagar and adjoining localities.

The underpass is part of a larger infrastructure plan valued at INR 35 crore. The project includes widening the Ajni Bridge to TB Ward Square corridor into six lanes and improving integration with the twin cable-stayed bridges that are currently under construction. Once completed, the corridor is expected to streamline connectivity between Congress Nagar, FCI and other surrounding areas.

Officials have indicated that while the temporary road will ease congestion to some extent, managing traffic during construction remains a complex task due to limited space and ongoing structural work. Further traffic regulation measures may be adjusted depending on ground conditions as the project progresses.
