Delhi authorities have proposed building a 5.3 km elevated road or tunnel between Talkatora Stadium and Dhaula Kuan to reduce congestion on Sardar Patel Marg, a key route to Indira Gandhi International Airport. The proposal has been sent to multiple agencies for review after earlier widening plans were dropped due to concerns over the Central Ridge. With only two lanes in each direction, the stretch faces heavy airport-bound traffic. Detailed feasibility and environmental assessments will now determine the project's future course.
Traffic congestion on Sardar Patel Marg has increased steadily due to rising airport-bound vehicles and pressure from connecting arterial roads. The stretch, which links central Delhi to Indira Gandhi International Airport, currently has two lanes in each direction and frequently witnesses bottlenecks, especially during peak travel hours.
In the past week, the Delhi Traffic Police's New Delhi range formally proposed constructing either a 5.3 km elevated corridor or an underground tunnel between Talkatora Stadium and Dhaula Kuan. The objective is to create additional capacity without disturbing the Central Ridge area that runs alongside the corridor.
Earlier proposals to widen the existing road were not pursued because expansion would have required tree cutting and could have affected the Ridge's green cover. The Ridge is considered ecologically sensitive and has historically restricted large-scale infrastructure modifications along this stretch. The new proposal attempts to address congestion while avoiding direct impact on this protected zone.
According to officials involved in the proposal, the current carriageway is inadequate to handle the increasing number of vehicles heading towards the airport as well as traffic merging from adjoining roads. The plan suggests that a grade-separated solution, either elevated or underground, would allow uninterrupted flow and reduce travel delays on this critical link.
The proposal has been shared with the New Delhi Municipal Council, the Public Works Department and the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre for examination. These agencies are expected to assess technical feasibility, cost implications, alignment planning, and environmental safeguards before any approval is granted.
If cleared, the project could also help reduce spill-over congestion on nearby corridors, including Vande Mataram Marg and connecting central Delhi routes. However, officials have not announced timelines for execution, and the proposal remains at the evaluation stage.
This corridor is considered strategically important because it provides direct connectivity to the airport and diplomatic areas, making traffic reliability a priority. Any final decision will depend on detailed engineering studies and environmental reviews conducted by the concerned authorities.
