The Network Planning Group under PM Gati Shakti has reviewed a series of infrastructure projects aimed at improving multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency across India. The evaluation covered rail, metro and highway developments aligned with integrated planning and last-mile connectivity goals. Key proposals include railway line expansions in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, metro network additions in Mumbai and Pune, and a strategic tunnel project in Ladakh. These initiatives are expected to reduce travel time, enhance freight movement, and improve regional accessibility, supporting economic activity across key corridors.
The Network Planning Group (NPG), operating under the PM Gati Shakti framework, has assessed a set of critical infrastructure proposals designed to improve connectivity, streamline logistics, and strengthen integrated transport networks across the country. The review, conducted as part of its ongoing evaluation process, covered two rail, two metro, and two road and highway projects.
Among the railway projects, the doubling of the existing broad-gauge line between Chengalpattu and Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu was examined, alongside a plan to construct an additional double line between Whitefield and Bangarpet in Karnataka. The latter forms part of a broader proposal to quadruple the corridor, enhancing capacity on the Bengaluru-Chennai route. Under this plan, existing lines will prioritise passenger services, while additional tracks will be used for freight, improving punctuality and reducing congestion.
On the urban transit front, the NPG reviewed the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 11, a fully underground corridor spanning 17.41 km from Anik Depot to Gateway of India. The project is expected to connect key commercial and residential hubs across South and Central Mumbai, including Wadala, Byculla and CSMT, while integrating with the wider metro network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
In Maharashtra, extensions to Pune Metro Line 4 identified as corridors 4B and 4C were also evaluated. Covering a combined length of 16.67 km, these extensions are expected to enhance urban mobility and support expanding suburban growth.
The NPG additionally reviewed the proposed construction of the Fotu La Tunnel in Ladakh. The 2.65 km tunnel aims to ensure all-weather connectivity along the Srinagar Leh highway by bypassing a high-altitude stretch prone to disruptions due to snowfall and avalanches. The project is expected to reduce travel distance and improve safety for both civilian and defence movement.
Overall, the projects were assessed for alignment with integrated infrastructure planning, last-mile connectivity, and inter-agency coordination. The initiatives are expected to improve logistics efficiency, reduce transit times, and contribute to regional economic development by strengthening transport linkages across key corridors.
