Synopsis

The renovated terminal building at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore will be inaugurated by the Civil Aviation Minister via video conference, increasing the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 50 lakh. The upgraded facility, developed at a cost of INR 50 crore, will function as an additional terminal, taking the total number of terminals at the airport to two. The existing terminal currently handles 40 lakh passengers annually, while the new facility will add capacity for another 10 lakh. The inauguration will also include the launch of a subsidised food outlet under the Udaan Yatri Cafe initiative, aimed at offering affordable refreshments to travellers.

The renovated terminal building at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore will be inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu via video conference, with the upgrade expected to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 50 lakh, officials said in the past week. The development marks an expansion of infrastructure at one of central India's key aviation hubs.

The project involves the refurbishment of the airport's old terminal building, which has been redeveloped at a cost of INR 50 crore and designated as Terminal 1 (T-1). With the commissioning of this additional facility, the airport will now operate two terminal buildings, enhancing its capacity to accommodate growing passenger traffic.

At present, the existing terminal building at the airport has an annual capacity of 40 lakh passengers. The addition of the renovated terminal is expected to increase the total handling capacity by 10 lakh passengers per year, taking the combined capacity to 50 lakh. The expansion is aimed at addressing rising passenger volumes and improving operational efficiency.

Indore Lok Sabha MP Shankar Lalwani indicated that the upgraded infrastructure would support the airport's growing traffic levels. The airport currently handles more than 100 flights daily, including 92 scheduled passenger services, reflecting its role as a significant regional aviation node.

Alongside the terminal inauguration, the minister will also launch the Udaan Yatri Cafe, an initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation designed to provide affordable food and beverage options to passengers. The facility will offer basic items at subsidised rates, including drinking water, tea, and commonly consumed snacks, with the aim of improving passenger convenience.

The expansion of terminal capacity is part of broader efforts to upgrade aviation infrastructure in non-metro cities to meet increasing demand for air travel. As passenger traffic continues to rise, airports in tier-II cities such as Indore are being expanded to ensure adequate capacity and service standards.

The addition of a second terminal building is expected to support better passenger management, reduce congestion, and enhance overall airport operations. It also aligns with ongoing initiatives to strengthen regional connectivity and improve passenger experience through infrastructure upgrades and service enhancements.

With increasing connectivity and flight frequency, the enhanced capacity at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is likely to support further growth in passenger traffic, reinforcing its position within the regional aviation network.
