State-run power producer NTPC has entered into a memorandum of understanding with UK-based Octopus Energy Group to jointly explore opportunities across electricity distribution, renewable energy, and storage segments. The agreement, signed at the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in New Delhi, outlines a non-binding framework for collaboration in India, the UK, and other mutually agreed markets. The partnership will also examine areas such as electric vehicle charging infrastructure, digital energy platforms, research and development, and capacity building. The initiative is aimed at improving efficiency, affordability, and reliability in power systems while supporting the expansion of clean energy solutions in multiple geographies.
NTPC Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding with UK-based Octopus Energy Group to explore business opportunities across electricity distribution, energy storage, and clean energy segments, with the agreement formalised on the sidelines of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 held in New Delhi in the past week. The collaboration is intended to identify and develop opportunities in India, the United Kingdom, and other mutually agreed geographies, with a focus on improving efficiency, affordability, and reliability in power systems.
The MoU was signed by Jatinder Singh Chandok, Head of International Business Development at NTPC, and Chris Fitzgerald, Group Director for International Affairs at Octopus Energy. The agreement establishes a non-binding framework for cooperation between the two organisations, enabling them to assess and pursue potential projects across a range of energy-related segments.
Under the arrangement, both entities will examine opportunities in electricity distribution and retail, renewable energy generation, and energy storage solutions. The scope of collaboration also includes electric vehicle charging infrastructure, digital energy platforms, innovation initiatives, and research and development activities. Capacity building has been identified as another area of engagement, indicating a focus on knowledge exchange and technical collaboration.
The partnership reflects NTPC's ongoing efforts to expand its presence beyond conventional power generation and diversify into newer segments aligned with energy transition goals. For Octopus Energy Group, the engagement provides an opportunity to explore partnerships in India's evolving power market while also strengthening its international footprint.
The companies stated that the collaboration would prioritise initiatives that contribute to enhancing system efficiency and reliability, while supporting the adoption of cleaner energy solutions. The inclusion of digital platforms and innovation-led approaches suggests a focus on modernising energy systems and improving operational performance.
While the MoU does not involve immediate financial commitments, it provides a structured platform for both organisations to jointly evaluate projects and develop business cases in identified areas. The emphasis on multiple geographies indicates that the scope of engagement is not limited to India but may extend to other international markets where both entities find alignment.
The agreement comes at a time when power sector stakeholders are increasingly focusing on integrating renewable energy, strengthening distribution networks, and deploying advanced technologies to manage demand and supply variations. The collaboration between NTPC and Octopus Energy is expected to support these objectives through joint exploration of scalable and technology-driven solutions across selected markets.
