Synopsis

The central government has approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled stretch of National Highway-927 in Uttar Pradesh with an investment of INR 6,969 crore. The 101.5 km project between Barabanki and Bahraich will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode. It aims to reduce travel time to nearly one hour, improve road safety, and enhance connectivity to the India Nepal border. The project will also strengthen links to major highways, generate employment, and support regional economic activity, especially in trade and logistics.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of a four-lane access-controlled section of National Highway-927 between Barabanki and Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. The project will be built at an estimated cost of INR 6,969.04 crore and will cover a total length of around 101.5 km. It will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, which involves shared investment between the government and private developers.

This highway forms part of the larger Lucknow Rupaidiha corridor and is expected to improve connectivity in eastern Uttar Pradesh, especially towards the India Nepal border. The route will pass through Barabanki, Ramnagar, Jarwal, Kaisarganj and Bahraich, connecting several semi-urban and rural areas to key economic centres.

The design includes access-controlled features to ensure smoother traffic movement and better safety. Around 48 km of bypasses will be constructed to divert traffic away from congested town areas. This is expected to reduce delays within towns and improve overall travel efficiency on the route.

Officials indicated that the improved highway is likely to bring down travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich to nearly one hour. At present, the journey takes longer due to traffic congestion and limited road capacity. The upgraded corridor is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle operating costs, which will benefit both commercial transporters and daily commuters.

The project will connect with major national highways such as NH-27, NH-330B and NH-730, along with state highways like SH-13 and SH-30B. It will also improve access to transport infrastructure including nearby railway stations and regional airports. Importantly, it will strengthen connectivity to the Rupaidiha land port, which plays a key role in trade with Nepal.

During construction, the project is expected to generate more than 79 lakh person-days of employment, providing a boost to local jobs and related economic activity. The improved connectivity is also likely to support small businesses, agriculture supply chains, and movement of goods across the region.

The corridor had been under planning for some time, with earlier stages involving feasibility studies and alignment approvals. With the latest clearance, the project has moved into the execution phase. It is part of the government's broader push to expand national highway infrastructure and improve logistics efficiency across states.
