The Nashik Municipal Corporation has extended the deadline for completing utility works on 28 key roads linked to the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The move allows additional time for laying underground infrastructure such as water pipelines, drainage lines, gas pipelines, and optical fibre networks before road construction begins. These roads are part of a larger infrastructure push worth around INR 1,270 crore aimed at improving connectivity across Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. The extension reflects coordination challenges among agencies, while ensuring that roads are not repeatedly dug up after completion.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has extended the deadline for completing utility-related works on 28 important roads connected to preparations for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The civic body has now set a revised deadline of March 31, giving departments additional time beyond the earlier mid-March target.
The decision has been taken to ensure that all underground utility work is completed before the start of road construction. Multiple agencies are involved in these works, including departments handling water supply, drainage, gas pipelines, and telecom infrastructure. The works mainly include laying water pipelines, stormwater drains, sewer lines, optical fibre cables, and piped natural gas networks across these stretches.
Officials indicated that some of the work was still pending due to coordination issues among different departments and agencies. A senior civic official stated that the extension was necessary to complete all installations properly so that newly constructed roads are not dug up again later for utility work. This step is expected to improve road durability and reduce repeated repair work in the future.
City engineer Sanjay Agrawal informed that once the utility works are fully completed, the road construction work will begin immediately without further delay. The 28 roads are part of a larger infrastructure plan focused on improving connectivity between Nashik city and Trimbakeshwar, which is one of the key locations for the Kumbh Mela.
The overall road development plan is part of a broader infrastructure push estimated at around INR 1,270 crore. This includes multiple road widening and strengthening projects across the city. In addition, the civic body has already approved several new road projects worth around INR 298.5 crore in recent months to support the same objective.
The administration has been working on a clear sequence where underground utilities are completed first, followed by road construction. This approach is being followed to avoid the common issue of freshly built roads being damaged due to later excavation for utilities.
Preparations for the Kumbh Mela are being carried out in phases, with strict timelines in place. The flag-hoisting ceremony is scheduled for October 2026, while the main event will be held between August and September 2027. Considering the expected arrival of a large number of devotees, the city is also working on parallel infrastructure such as bridges, highway upgrades, and traffic management systems.
Officials believe that completing utility works in advance will help ensure smoother execution of road projects and better infrastructure readiness ahead of the event.
