The 14.6 km Chennai Metro stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani is now expected to open only after state assembly elections, due to restrictions under the model code of conduct and the desire for a full ceremonial launch. Conditional safety approvals have been granted, but final deck slab installations, signalling system adjustments, and incomplete stations remain. Initial services will operate on a limited schedule with selective station stops, gradually expanding as remaining stations and infrastructure are ready, providing much needed connectivity for west and central Chennai commuters.
The Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani metro section, part of Chennai Metro's Phase II expansion, has seen its launch delayed to post-election periods, now likely in mid-May to June. Authorities cited election code restrictions and the preference for a formal inauguration as reasons for postponing the opening.
This 14.6 kilometre corridor is part of the larger 26.1 km Lighthouse Poonamallee Bypass corridor, and it has received conditional safety approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Most structural works, including the double-decker viaduct linking this corridor to the adjacent line, are nearly complete, though a few deck slabs and finishing touches remain pending.
Trial runs have been carried out between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, and subsequently from Porur to Vadapalani, to test train operations and signalling systems. However, certain stations, such as Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Saligramam warehouse, and Saligramam, are still under construction and will open in phases after the line becomes operational.
Once services commence, trains between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur are expected to run at 15 minute intervals. Between Porur and Vadapalani, trains will initially run at 20 minute intervals with speed limits slightly lower than usual, resulting in a total travel time of approximately 35 minutes. The phased rollout approach ensures commuter safety while gradually increasing accessibility along the route.
Officials are addressing signalling issues identified during trials, and work on platform finishes, escalators, and related infrastructure is ongoing. Commuters anticipate significant reductions in travel time across west and central Chennai once the line is fully operational. This metro stretch will also integrate with other Phase II corridors, enhancing overall connectivity for residents and easing congestion on key arterial roads.
