VA Tech Wabag Ltd has secured a contract worth over INR 1,000 crore from Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to strengthen water infrastructure in Chennai. The project includes development of a large transmission network, along with the revival and long-term operation of a 45 MLD tertiary treatment plant at Kodungaiyur. It aims to improve water distribution, support industrial demand, and expand reuse of treated wastewater. The project is part of the city's broader push to build a more reliable and sustainable water supply system.

The scope of work includes the design, construction, financing, and operation of a city-wide water transmission system. This will involve laying bulk transmission pipelines, developing feeder mains, setting up pumping stations, and creating underground storage infrastructure. The system will also include monitoring and control mechanisms to improve operational efficiency and ensure better management of water distribution across different parts of the city.
A key component of the project is the refurbishment and revival of a 45 million litres per day tertiary treatment reverse osmosis (TTRO) plant located at Kodungaiyur. The plant, which had been underutilised, is expected to be restored to full capacity within around 18 months. After this, the company will handle operations and maintenance for a long-term period of nearly 20 years, ensuring sustained performance and supply.
The treated water from this facility will continue to be supplied to industrial clusters in the Manali Ennore and Manali Minjur corridors. This is important as it reduces dependence on freshwater sources and allows industries to rely more on recycled water, which has been a key focus area for Chennai's water management strategy.
The project is part of a broader plan to create a flexible and integrated water grid in Chennai. The objective is to improve distribution efficiency, manage pressure levels across the network, and enable better utilisation of treated wastewater. The city has faced repeated water stress in the past due to uneven rainfall and rising demand, making such infrastructure upgrades necessary.
Chennai has already invested in desalination plants and water reuse facilities over the years to diversify its water sources. This new transmission network is expected to complement existing infrastructure and strengthen the overall system by ensuring that treated and desalinated water can be distributed more effectively.
For VA Tech Wabag, this order adds to its portfolio of large urban water projects and provides long-term revenue visibility through operations and maintenance. The company has been actively involved in wastewater treatment, desalination, and industrial water reuse projects across India and international markets.
