Tata Power-DDL prepares for higher summer electricity demand in Delhi with peak load expected to reach 2,622 MW

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited has announced preparations to manage rising electricity demand during the upcoming summer season in Delhi. The utility expects peak demand within its service area to reach around 2,622 MW, while the overall peak demand across the capital could exceed 9,200 MW. To meet the anticipated requirement, the company has arranged power supply of up to 2,900 MW through multiple sourcing mechanisms including bilateral agreements and power exchange participation. Additional measures such as network upgrades, predictive maintenance and energy storage systems have been implemented to ensure reliable electricity supply across North Delhi, where the utility serves nearly nine million consumers.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited has outlined its summer preparedness plan as electricity demand in Delhi is expected to increase during the upcoming peak season.


The power utility, which supplies electricity to around nine million consumers in North Delhi, estimates that peak power demand in its distribution area could reach approximately 2,622 MW during the summer months. The company stated that it has already made arrangements to secure up to 2,900 MW of power to manage the expected demand surge.

Across the national capital region, overall peak electricity demand is projected to cross 9,200 MW during the same period.

The company indicated that it has implemented multiple procurement mechanisms to ensure adequate power availability. These include bilateral agreements with power suppliers, reserve shutdown arrangements and participation in power exchanges to maintain supply reliability during periods of high demand.

Energy storage infrastructure will also support the network during peak periods. The company's Battery Energy Storage Systems installed in Rohini are expected to provide additional support by delivering backup power to critical consumers during contingencies.

To strengthen operational readiness, the utility has deployed several technology-driven systems for demand forecasting and energy management. These include advanced statistical and machine learning-based models for load forecasting, along with an integrated digital energy portfolio management platform designed to optimise power procurement and distribution.

Historical data indicates that electricity demand in the company's service area has been increasing steadily. Peak demand reached around 2,410 MW in the previous summer season, while earlier years recorded peak loads of approximately 2,481 MW, 2,218 MW and 2,028 MW respectively.

Alongside power procurement arrangements, the company has carried out network strengthening measures to support higher electricity loads. These initiatives include the commissioning of new distribution transformers and the augmentation of existing transformers across the distribution network.

Preventive and condition-based maintenance has also been undertaken at critical electrical installations to minimise the risk of equipment failure during periods of high demand.

To reduce outages and operational disruptions, the utility has implemented predictive maintenance programmes for 11 kV feeders and distribution transformers. The measures include thermo-scanning, physical inspections, infrared monitoring and ultrasound testing of grid substation equipment.

Other steps undertaken include regular tree trimming near power lines, vegetation maintenance along sub-transmission overhead lines and replacement of faulty electrical units.

The company has also prepared contingency arrangements to manage unexpected outages or infrastructure failures. Mobile distribution transformers have been deployed across the network to address breakdowns and support rapid restoration of supply where required.

Additional staff have been deployed at customer service centres and round-the-clock teams have been created to respond to power supply disruptions and restore services quickly during the summer period.

According to the company, these combined measures are intended to ensure reliable electricity supply across its distribution area as demand rises during the peak summer months.
