VOC Port Authority has arranged an additional 90,000 square meters of space for shipping lines to store their containers in response to the ongoing West Asia crisis, according to its Chairman, Susanta Kumar Purohit. Purohit said the port has provided extra land to customers to safely store goods beyond the usual time limits, anticipating container diversions due to the crisis. As of now, this additional space remains unused since port operations and business have not been disrupted.
The Chairman also highlighted that all major ports maintain regular coordination with the Ministry of Shipping, terminal operators, and shipping lines to manage challenges efficiently.
He further added that the government is actively working to establish India as a hub for shipbuilding and ship recycling. This initiative aims to conserve resources and ensure better availability of raw materials for shipbuilding projects.
VOC Chidambaranar Port, located at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, is among India's major ports, handling around 82 million tonnes of cargo annually.
