Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects worth around INR 11,000 crore in Kerala. The initiatives include a major polypropylene unit at the Kochi refinery of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, a floating solar power plant, and upgrades to road and rail infrastructure. The projects are aimed at strengthening petrochemical manufacturing, expanding renewable energy capacity and improving transport connectivity. These developments are expected to support industrial activity, improve logistics movement and add to Kerala's long-term infrastructure capacity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched and initiated multiple development projects worth around INR 11,000 crore during a visit to Ernakulam in Kerala. The projects cover petrochemicals, renewable energy, road infrastructure and railway development, and are intended to improve the state's industrial ecosystem while strengthening energy and transport networks.
One of the largest projects announced during the programme is the foundation stone for a polypropylene unit at the Kochi refinery operated by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. The petrochemical unit is being developed at an estimated cost of over INR 5,500 crore and will have a production capacity of about 400 kilo tonnes per annum.
Polypropylene is an important petrochemical material used in the manufacturing of plastic products, packaging materials, automotive parts, medical equipment and textiles. The new facility is expected to strengthen domestic petrochemical production and help reduce dependence on imported raw materials used by several manufacturing industries. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities during both construction and operational stages.
The Kochi refinery, which is one of the largest public sector refineries in southern India, has been undergoing gradual expansion over the past decade to increase its refining and petrochemical capacity. Earlier investments at the refinery have included modernisation and expansion projects aimed at improving fuel production and meeting rising energy demand in the region.
Another project launched during the programme is a 50 MW floating solar power plant at West Kallada. Floating solar plants are built on water bodies and allow solar panels to generate electricity without occupying large areas of land. These projects also help reduce water evaporation and improve solar panel efficiency due to lower temperatures over water surfaces.
The West Kallada floating solar facility will contribute to the expansion of renewable energy generation in Kerala and support India's broader efforts to increase clean energy capacity. The country has been gradually expanding its solar power installations, including ground-mounted and floating projects, as part of its energy transition strategy.
Apart from energy and industrial projects, several transport infrastructure developments were also inaugurated and launched. These include upgrades and improvements to road and railway infrastructure across parts of Kerala aimed at strengthening regional connectivity.
Improved road networks and railway facilities are expected to support smoother passenger movement and improve freight transportation in the state. Kerala's transport infrastructure faces challenges due to high population density, limited land availability and growing logistics demand, making such upgrades important for long-term urban and regional development.
During the event, the Prime Minister stated that the projects were intended to strengthen manufacturing, improve infrastructure and increase clean energy generation in the state. According to him, these initiatives would contribute to economic activity while also improving ease of living for people.
Infrastructure development has been a continuing focus in Kerala in recent years. Previous central government initiatives in the state have included railway modernisation projects, expansion of logistics infrastructure and support for startup and innovation facilities. These investments have aimed to improve connectivity and strengthen economic opportunities across different regions of the state.
The newly launched projects add to this broader infrastructure push and are expected to contribute to industrial growth, improved energy capacity and better transport networks in the coming years.
