Synopsis

Bharat Forge's aerospace division has inaugurated a new landing gear components machining facility in Mundhwa, Pune, developed in partnership with Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS. The plant will manufacture high-precision landing gear components used in civil and military aircraft programs. With this development, Bharat Forge becomes one of the few companies in India with OEM-approved capabilities to machine such critical aerospace parts at scale. The facility expands the company's aerospace portfolio and supports India's growing role in global aviation supply chains as aircraft production and demand for specialised components continue to increase.

Bharat Forge's aerospace division has inaugurated a landing gear components machining facility in Mundhwa, Pune, in collaboration with Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS. The facility is designed to manufacture high-precision landing gear components used in aircraft systems and represents a further expansion of Bharat Forge's aerospace manufacturing operations.


The plant has been developed to produce complex landing gear parts that require high levels of accuracy and specialised machining processes. Landing gear components are considered critical structural elements in aircraft because they support the aircraft's full weight during landing, take-off and taxiing. The new unit has been equipped with advanced machining centres that can handle difficult materials and tight tolerances required for aerospace applications.

With the launch of the facility, Bharat Forge becomes one of the few companies in India to operate original equipment manufacturer approved landing gear component machining capabilities at scale. The plant will manufacture components for a range of aviation programs, including commercial aircraft, defence aircraft and other specialised aviation platforms.

Senior representatives from both organisations attended the inauguration. The Liebherr-Aerospace delegation included Martin Wandel, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, Philipp Walter, Managing Director at Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, and Bernd Schacherl, Director Procurement. Bharat Forge was represented by Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director, along with Guru Biswal, Chief Executive Officer of the company's aerospace division.

During the inauguration, Amit Kalyani stated that the new facility marks an important step in the company's aerospace journey and strengthens its ability to support global customers with advanced manufacturing capabilities. He also indicated that the collaboration with Liebherr-Aerospace reflects the company's long-term strategy to expand its role in high-value aerospace component manufacturing.

The partnership between the two companies had been announced earlier at the Aero India event, where both sides outlined plans to establish a dedicated aerospace manufacturing facility in Pune to address increasing demand for aircraft components worldwide. The newly inaugurated unit represents the implementation of that collaboration.

Bharat Forge has gradually expanded its presence in the aerospace sector over the past several years. The company already manufactures a range of aerospace components including aero-engine parts, forged rings, shafts, discs and structural airframe components. The addition of landing gear component machining further strengthens its aerospace portfolio and broadens the range of systems it can supply to global aircraft manufacturers.

Industry observers note that projects such as this are helping build advanced aerospace manufacturing capability in India. As aircraft production continues to rise globally, demand for specialised precision-engineered components is also increasing. Facilities like the Pune unit can help Indian companies participate more actively in global aviation supply chains while also reducing dependence on imported aerospace components.

The development also highlights the growing collaboration between Indian engineering companies and international aerospace suppliers. With established aerospace clusters developing around cities such as Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, manufacturers are gradually expanding their role from basic engineering components to complex aviation systems and assemblies.
