Southern Railway has started the process of leasing out a newly built multi-level parking facility at Chennai Egmore railway station through an online auction. The parking area is located inside a Multi-Functional Complex on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side of the station and includes the second, third and fourth floors of the structure. The selected licensee will manage vehicle movement, parking operations, maintenance and manpower at the site. Railways have also allowed the possibility of introducing services such as EV charging stations and pay-and-use facilities with prior approval. The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger amenities and traffic management at the busy station.

Southern Railway has initiated an online auction process to appoint an operator for a newly developed multi-level parking facility at Chennai Egmore railway station. The parking infrastructure has been created as part of wider efforts by Indian Railways to improve passenger amenities and manage increasing vehicle movement around one of the city's major railway hubs.


The parking facility forms part of a Multi-Functional Complex (MFC) constructed within the station premises. The complex is located on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side of the station and includes designated floors developed specifically for structured parking. Railway authorities have now opened the process to select a licensee who will operate and maintain the facility.

The proposed contract covers parking areas located on the second, third and fourth floors of the MFC building. These levels have been designed to accommodate vehicles belonging to passengers visiting the station as well as people accessing commercial establishments within the complex. With increasing passenger traffic at the station, structured parking has been planned to help organise vehicle movement and reduce congestion in surrounding roads.

According to details shared by railway officials, the operator selected through the e-auction will be responsible for the complete management of the parking facility. This includes regulating vehicle entry and exit, maintaining orderly parking arrangements, collecting parking fees, ensuring cleanliness and deploying adequate staff for smooth day-to-day functioning of the premises.

The licensee will also be responsible for maintaining safety, traffic discipline and proper usage of the parking space. Railway authorities have indicated that systematic management of the facility is essential because Egmore station handles a large number of passengers every day and the surrounding areas often face traffic pressure due to private vehicles and taxis dropping or picking up passengers.

Officials have also permitted the operator to introduce certain additional services within the designated parking floors after obtaining prior approval from the railways. These services may include electric vehicle charging stations, pay-and-use public amenities and other facilities that can improve convenience for passengers and visitors using the parking area.

Revenue from such value-added services will depend on operational feasibility and market demand, but the railways will retain oversight to ensure that the facility continues to primarily serve station users.

The decision to conduct the allotment through an e-auction has been taken to ensure transparency and wider participation from interested operators. Railway authorities believe the digital bidding process helps attract competitive offers while also streamlining the allotment of commercial spaces and infrastructure facilities within railway premises.

Chennai Egmore is one of the important railway stations in southern India and serves as a major terminal for trains connecting Chennai with several parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Over the past few years, Indian Railways has been gradually upgrading the station's infrastructure by introducing organised parking areas, commercial spaces and better passenger circulation facilities.

The development of multi-level parking within the station premises is part of these broader efforts to modernise older railway stations and improve the overall travel experience for passengers while also generating additional non-fare revenue for the railways.
