Lufthansa Group has increased its long-haul flight capacity to Asia and Africa after witnessing a sharp rise in travel demand. The airline has added additional services on routes including Munich Singapore, Frankfurt Cape Town and Frankfurt Riyadh, while Austrian Airlines has scheduled special flights between Vienna and Bangkok. The move comes as disruptions around Middle Eastern transit hubs such as Dubai and Doha have affected global aviation networks. With several Gulf carriers operating fewer flights due to regional tensions, European airlines are adjusting schedules and adding capacity to maintain connectivity and meet growing passenger demand for direct long-haul travel.
Lufthansa Group has expanded its long-haul flight network by introducing additional services to several destinations in Asia and Africa. The airline group has added extra flights between Munich and Singapore and increased services on routes from Frankfurt to Cape Town and Frankfurt to Riyadh. These additional flights have been scheduled to address the growing demand for long-distance travel, which has risen significantly over the past few weeks.
Alongside Lufthansa's network changes, Austrian Airlines, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, has also increased operations on Asian routes. The carrier has arranged ten special return flights between Vienna and Bangkok to accommodate passengers looking for direct travel options between Europe and Southeast Asia. The decision followed a noticeable surge in last-minute bookings for these long-haul sectors.
Airline officials indicated that the additional services were introduced after monitoring booking patterns across major international routes. Passenger demand for long-haul flights has increased as travellers seek alternatives to traditional connecting routes through the Middle East.
The global aviation network has been affected by disruptions in airspace and operations around major Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai and Doha. These airports typically serve as key transit points for long-distance travel operated by Gulf carriers. However, the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran have resulted in operational changes and flight restrictions in the region, affecting several connecting services.
As a result, some passengers have shifted to direct flights offered by European airlines instead of relying on transit routes through the Gulf region. This change in travel patterns has led airlines such as Lufthansa to adjust their flight schedules and add more capacity on routes where demand has increased.
Other European carriers have also responded in a similar manner. Airlines including British Airways and the Air France-KLM Group have made operational adjustments by increasing frequencies on certain long-haul routes and deploying larger aircraft on sectors where bookings have grown.
Industry reports indicate that demand for direct long-haul flights to Asian destinations has increased noticeably compared with the previous year. Many travellers are now preferring direct or shorter-transit options to avoid uncertainty related to connecting flights through affected regions.
The aviation industry has been facing frequent route adjustments over the past few years due to geopolitical developments, airspace restrictions and operational challenges. Airlines have increasingly adopted flexible scheduling strategies so they can quickly shift aircraft capacity to routes where demand remains stable or continues to grow.
Lufthansa has indicated that it will continue monitoring passenger demand and operational conditions across its global network. If bookings remain strong, the airline group may consider adding more flights or adjusting schedules further to ensure connectivity on important long-haul routes linking Europe with Asia and Africa.
