The Lucknow Municipal Corporation intensified its property tax recovery drive and sealed seven establishments across two zones of the city after they failed to clear long-pending dues despite repeated notices. Three properties in one zone had arrears exceeding INR 1.5 crore, while four others in another zone together owed close to INR 1 crore and additional dues exceeding INR 94 lakh. The establishments include government-linked offices, a research centre and public institutions. Civic officials said the action followed multiple warnings and was carried out under municipal rules as part of efforts to improve tax recovery and ensure compliance among institutional property owners.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) recently sealed seven establishments in different parts of the city after they failed to pay pending property and house tax dues even after receiving several notices from the civic administration.
The action was carried out in two municipal zones where the corporation identified institutional properties with large outstanding tax liabilities. Officials said these establishments had been repeatedly asked to clear the dues, but payment was not made within the stipulated time. Following this, enforcement teams proceeded with sealing the premises under the provisions of municipal tax recovery rules.
Action in first zone over arrears exceeding INR 1.5 crore
In one of the municipal zones, a civic team sealed three establishments that together had property tax arrears exceeding INR 1.5 crore. The enforcement drive was supervised by zonal officer Shilpa Kumari, along with officials from the tax department.
Among the properties sealed was the Urdu Teaching and Research Center, which had outstanding tax dues of around INR 1.23 crore. A building linked to the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) was also sealed after officials found unpaid property tax of about INR 52.73 lakh.
In addition, a transmission building located in the same zone was sealed due to pending dues of approximately INR 2.22 lakh. Officials indicated that notices had been issued earlier to these establishments asking them to deposit the pending amount, but the dues remained unpaid.
Civic authorities said the sealing was carried out after completing the required procedural steps, including verification of arrears and issuing multiple reminders.
A similar enforcement drive was conducted in another zone of the city, where four establishments were sealed due to pending property tax liabilities.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of zonal officer Sanjay Yadav, along with tax superintendent Om Prakash Soni and revenue inspector Namita Singh.
Two government offices located near Raja Bazar were sealed after officials found substantial property tax arrears. These included the Director of Secondary Education, Uttar Pradesh office, which had outstanding dues of around INR 46.81 lakh, and the Secondary State Library Cooperation Unit, where arrears of about INR 17.68 lakh were recorded.
Another establishment in the same premises, the Government District Library, was sealed due to unpaid property tax amounting to approximately INR 23.60 lakh.
In a separate action in the Talkatora area, the civic body sealed a property linked to the UP Agro Industrial Corporation Limited, where pending property tax dues were found to be around INR 94.04 lakh.
Part of broader tax recovery drive
Officials indicated that these actions are part of an ongoing effort by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation to recover pending property tax from major defaulters, particularly institutional and government-linked establishments.
Property tax remains one of the primary sources of revenue for municipal bodies and is used to fund civic services such as sanitation, road maintenance, drainage systems, and other public infrastructure. Delayed payments from large property holders can affect municipal finances and the execution of city development works.
In previous recovery drives as well, the corporation has sealed commercial establishments and institutional properties that repeatedly ignored tax payment notices. Officials usually issue demand notices and reminders before taking strict enforcement steps such as sealing premises.
Municipal authorities have stated that the recovery campaign will continue in other zones as well, with a focus on identifying properties that have accumulated significant tax arrears over time.
