Noida International Airport at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district has received an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), marking a critical regulatory milestone ahead of the launch of scheduled commercial operations. The licence certifies that the airport's infrastructure, operational procedures, navigation systems, and safety protocols comply with national civil aviation regulations. The approval follows security vetting by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and allows the airport operator to advance preparations for passenger and cargo services. Officials indicated that the start of commercial flights will be finalised after approval of the Aerodrome Security Programme by BCAS and coordination with airlines and government authorities. Developed as a greenfield airport serving the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh, the facility's first phase includes a runway and a terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually.
Noida International Airport in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar district, has received an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), bringing the upcoming airport closer to commencing scheduled commercial flight operations after completing key regulatory approvals.
The licence, issued under Rule 78 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, confirms that the airport complies with DGCA requirements covering operational procedures, safety systems, airside infrastructure, navigation aids, and emergency response arrangements. This certification is required for airports to handle commercial aviation activities and marks a critical stage in the regulatory process before flight services can begin.
The approval follows security vetting by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which reviewed the airport's security infrastructure, surveillance systems, access control mechanisms, and passenger screening arrangements. With the aerodrome licence granted, authorities are now reviewing the airport's Aerodrome Security Programme, after which the final schedule for the start of commercial operations will be determined in coordination with relevant agencies and airlines.
Officials from Noida International Airport recently presented the aerodrome licence to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a meeting in Lucknow, where they briefed the state government on the project's progress and remaining regulatory procedures before launch. Authorities indicated that operational preparations, airline coordination, and infrastructure readiness are progressing as the project moves toward the final stage before opening.
The greenfield airport, located in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddha Nagar district, is being developed to improve air connectivity for the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh. The project is being implemented in multiple phases, with the initial phase comprising a runway and a terminal building spanning approximately 138,000 square metres. This phase is designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually.
Infrastructure developed in the first phase includes check-in counters, aerobridges, immigration and security facilities, aircraft parking bays, and a cargo handling system. Additional features such as solar power installations and rainwater harvesting systems have been incorporated as part of the airport's infrastructure planning.
The project is being developed through a public-private partnership framework, with Yamuna International Airport Private Limited a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG serving as the concessionaire responsible for developing and operating the facility. The airport is expected to expand through additional phases in the coming decades, significantly increasing passenger handling capacity as aviation demand in the region grows.
Once operational, the airport is expected to function as a major aviation hub serving the wider NCR region and neighbouring districts of western Uttar Pradesh. Officials indicated that further announcements regarding airline schedules, ticket sales, and the formal inauguration will be made after the remaining regulatory approvals are completed.
