Air India has scheduled 78 additional international flights across nine routes to Europe, the United States, and neighbouring destinations to ease travel disruptions caused by the ongoing situation in West Asia. The extra flights, running between March 10 and March 18, will provide about 17,660 additional seats in both directions. Key connections include New York, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Malé, and Colombo, mainly from Delhi and Mumbai. The move aims to support passengers affected by airspace closures and operational challenges in Gulf countries while maintaining India's long?haul connectivity.
Air India has introduced 78 extra international flights across nine routes to Europe, North America, and nearby destinations in response to ongoing disruptions in West Asia. These additional flights will operate from March 10 to March 18, adding roughly 17,660 seats in both directions to accommodate growing passenger demand. The expansion covers flights primarily from Delhi and Mumbai, connecting India to major international hubs.
The new services include flights to New York (JFK), London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam, Zurich, and regional routes to Mal? and Colombo. Mumbai will receive extra flights to London, while Delhi will handle most other additional services. Air India highlighted that the expanded schedule aims to provide passengers with more travel options at a time when traditional routes through the Gulf remain constrained.
Air India confirmed that despite operational challenges in the region, it continues scheduled services to Europe and North America by using alternative safe flight paths. These routes have been carefully planned to ensure passenger safety while maintaining connectivity.
The airline plans to operate Boeing 787?8 aircraft on European routes, Airbus A320neo aircraft for flights to Mal? and Colombo, and Boeing 777?300ER aircraft for services to New York, pending regulatory approvals. This choice of aircraft ensures adequate capacity and comfort on long?haul routes.
The decision comes as the aviation sector faces significant disruption following geopolitical tensions in parts of the Middle East. Several countries temporarily closed their airspace, affecting airlines worldwide and forcing cancellations or reroutes. This situation has limited travel options for passengers travelling between India and western destinations, particularly as Gulf carriers serve as major transit hubs for such flights.
Recent aviation reports show hundreds of flights have already been delayed or cancelled due to these restrictions and operational uncertainties in West Asia. Indian airports, especially Delhi and Mumbai, experienced schedule adjustments and minor delays in the past week as airlines worked to reroute flights safely.
Air India?s additional flights aim to reduce travel disruptions and maintain steady connectivity. By increasing capacity on major long?haul corridors to Europe and North America, the airline ensures passengers have alternative options during this period of global aviation uncertainty.
