RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has been awarded a INR 455 crore contract to implement the Kavach automatic train protection system across 1,067 route kilometres in the Jabalpur Division of West Central Railway. The project will span key high-traffic corridors, including the Itarsi-Manikpur Section, Mahdeiya-Bina Malkheri-Mahadeokheri, the entire Katni complex, Bina Malkheri-Agasod, Satna-Rewa, Kaima-Sagma, and Bansapahar-Ohan sections.
Under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, RailTel will handle surveying, designing, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning the trackside Kavach systems. The work will also include installation at stations, level crossing gates, intermediate block signaling points, optical fibre cable networks, towers, and associated civil, track, and electrical work. The project is scheduled for completion within 960 days, demonstrating a structured approach to enhancing operational safety.
Kavach, developed indigenously, is designed to prevent train collisions, control over-speeding, and stop signal passing at danger (SPAD). The system integrates onboard and trackside technologies to strengthen operational reliability and passenger safety, particularly on busy routes. This deployment in Jabalpur builds on RailTel's ongoing projects covering 1,109 route kilometres in East Central Railway, highlighting the company's growing role in railway safety modernisation.
Sanjai Kumar, RailTel's Chairman and Managing Director, mentioned that this order from West Central Railway is a recognition of the company's capabilities in delivering critical railway safety infrastructure. He added that Kavach is a transformational initiative for Indian Railways and reaffirmed RailTel's commitment to supporting safer and technology-driven rail operations through indigenous solutions.
