Synopsis

Guwahati railway station has introduced new passenger facilities aimed at improving comfort and convenience for travellers using the busy Northeast rail hub. The development includes a sleeping pod, an air-conditioned waiting lounge and multi-cuisine food options, with special focus on hygiene and safety for women passengers. The facility was inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who also pointed to higher rail spending in the region, including an allocation of INR 11,486 crore and ongoing projects worth INR 72,468 crore to strengthen connectivity.

Guwahati railway station has added a new passenger facility as part of ongoing efforts to improve station infrastructure and traveller experience across the Northeast. The facility was inaugurated earlier this week by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw through a virtual event and is located just outside the main station building, making it easily accessible for passengers arriving early or waiting for departures.

The newly developed space includes a sleeping pod facility, a fully air-conditioned lounge, and multi-cuisine food outlets designed to serve passengers during long waiting hours or transit breaks. The station authorities have also provided dedicated amenities focused on cleanliness, safety and convenience for women passengers, addressing a long-standing need at one of the region's busiest railway stations.

During the inauguration, the Railway Minister stated that rail infrastructure development in the Northeast has seen a steady rise over the past decade. He highlighted that the region has received a record allocation of INR 11,486 crore for railway projects in the latest budget cycle. In addition, rail works worth approximately INR 72,468 crore are currently under execution across the Northeast, covering new lines, station redevelopment, electrification and capacity expansion.

Guwahati station plays a critical role as the main rail gateway to Assam and neighbouring states, handling high passenger volumes daily. In recent years, Indian Railways and Northeast Frontier Railway have undertaken multiple upgrades at the station, including improvements to retiring rooms, waiting halls and passenger circulation areas, to align facilities with growing travel demand.

The new passenger facility is part of a broader push to modernise major stations while improving regional connectivity. Alongside station upgrades, new train services and expanded routes have been introduced across the Northeast to improve access between state capitals, economic centres and remote regions. These measures are aimed at supporting mobility, trade and economic integration without altering the station's core operational structure.
