Synopsis

Renewed clashes between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur's Ukhrul district resulted in widespread arson, with more than 20 homes destroyed in and around the Litan area. The unrest began after an alleged assault on a Tangkhul Naga man, leading to stone-pelting exchanges and prolonged confrontations. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders and deployed security forces to restore order. Political leaders have been involved in talks to calm tensions, and efforts continue to prevent further escalation.

Tensions resurfaced in Manipur's Ukhrul district after clashes erupted between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki tribal communities, resulting in widespread damage to residential property. The violence followed an alleged physical assault on a Tangkhul Naga individual in the Litan area, which soon triggered stone-pelting between groups from both communities.

As the situation deteriorated, miscreants set fire to houses late at night, initially affecting a handful of structures. Due to strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, eventually gutting more than 20 houses across Litan and surrounding villages. Most of the damaged homes belonged to members of the Tangkhul Naga community, while a few Kuki households were also affected. Several vehicles and government residential quarters were partially damaged during the incident.

Following the arson attacks, residents from the affected areas were forced to flee, carrying basic belongings and seeking shelter in safer locations. Road connectivity between Ukhrul and Imphal was disrupted due to the unrest, affecting movement of civilians and essential supplies. To maintain access, the state administration arranged additional helicopter services on the Imphal Ukhrul route.

The district administration imposed prohibitory orders restricting public movement to prevent further escalation. Security forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force and Border Security Force, were deployed in and around the affected areas to stabilise the situation and prevent fresh incidents.

State leaders and district officials held discussions with community representatives to reduce tensions and restore calm. Police registered cases related to the violence and arson, and investigations are underway to identify those responsible. Authorities stated that efforts are continuing to ensure displaced families can return safely once conditions normalise.
