The Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has announced the signing of a 220-key Taj hotel in Weligama, Sri Lanka, marking a further expansion of the group's presence in the Indian Ocean tourism market. The greenfield development will also include 80 luxury apartments, positioning the project as a mixed-use hospitality and residential offering aligned with evolving travel and lifestyle trends. Weligama is emerging as a prominent coastal destination, supported by growing interest in surfing, wellness-focused tourism and nature-led travel experiences. With Sri Lanka's tourism sector witnessing steady recovery and renewed international interest, the project strengthens Taj's regional footprint through a strategic partnership with Beryll Group. The signing reflects IHCL's broader strategy of targeting high-potential leisure destinations while combining hotel operations with branded residential formats to enhance long-term asset value.
The Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) earlier this week announced the signing of a 220-key Taj hotel in Weligama, Sri Lanka, as part of its ongoing international expansion strategy. The project will be developed as a greenfield hospitality asset and will also feature 80 luxury apartments, the company said in a statement.
IHCL's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal said Weligama was evolving into one of Sri Lanka's key coastal destinations, supported by the growth of surfing, wellness tourism and nature-led travel. He noted that, with tourism gaining momentum across the country, the development would strengthen the Taj brand's presence in the region. He added that the company was pleased to partner with Beryll Group for the project.
The proposed development reflects IHCL's focus on leisure-led destinations and mixed-use formats that integrate hospitality with branded residences. As Sri Lanka continues to attract international travellers, coastal locations such as Weligama are increasingly drawing investor and developer interest, supported by improving tourism fundamentals and destination-led demand.
