The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a housing project to benefit 177 families residing in the Velampeta slum area of Visakhapatnam. Residents, mostly daily wage workers, have been living in the area for nearly five decades under difficult conditions, particularly during the monsoon. The government's decision follows a field visit by Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana. Alongside the housing plan, officials discussed fast-tracking seven roads under the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) master plan and developing a tourism circuit to enhance urban amenities and infrastructure. This initiative reflects focused efforts to improve both living standards and city planning in the region.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken steps to develop permanent housing for 177 families living in the Velampeta slum in Visakhapatnam. This decision was finalised during a meeting chaired by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana, attended by officials from the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), including GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and Metropolitan Commissioner Tej Bharath. Minister Narayana had previously visited the Velampeta Lakshmi Nagar slum in the Vizag South constituency, accompanied by local representatives and officials. During this visit, residents highlighted that most families have been living in the area for nearly 50 years and endure daily hardships, particularly during heavy rains. They requested immediate housing allotments along with access to essential services. Observing the cramped living conditions firsthand, the minister described the situation as distressing and assured that the Velampeta area would be developed as a special project with comprehensive planning.
During the Amaravati meeting, discussions also focused on the VMRDA master plan, which proposes a total of 15 new roads in the region. Minister Narayana instructed officials to fast-track seven of these roads in the first phase to improve connectivity and urban mobility. Additionally, plans for a tourism circuit linking Kailasagiri, Kambalakonda, and the Zoo Park were reviewed, with an emphasis on coordinating with the tourism department to enhance city attractions and infrastructure. The minister also stressed the need to raise public awareness for the regularisation of unauthorised buildings and layouts within VMRDA limits, ensuring that urban development aligns with regulatory frameworks.
Residents of Velampeta and surrounding slum areas have long faced challenges due to insufficient housing, inadequate drainage, and poor access to water and other basic amenities. The government's initiative aims to address these long-standing issues while integrating the slum redevelopment with broader urban infrastructure plans. This includes strengthening roads, improving public spaces, and promoting sustainable urban growth within the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan region.
