The Delhi government has approved an allocation of INR 100 crore for the implementation of an Advanced Traffic System (ATS) aimed at enhancing road safety and traffic management across the city. The funding forms part of a larger INR 1,200 crore grant released to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) by the chief minister, which also covers other transport modernisation initiatives. The ATS will incorporate a suite of technologies including traffic control systems, high-resolution video surveillance and electronic enforcement tools, and will be linked with a central command centre to facilitate real-time monitoring and quicker emergency responses. Officials said the ATS will integrate advanced technologies for traffic control, video surveillance and electronic enforcement to monitor road conditions and identify incidents swiftly. A central control and command centre is expected to serve as the system's operational hub, enabling authorities to observe traffic flows in real time and make rapid decisions during emergencies such as accidents, congestion, foggy conditions or road obstructions.
The system will include high-resolution surveillance devices and other detection tools to support instantaneous incident recognition, which authorities believe will contribute to faster on-site assistance and more effective emergency responses. These enhancements are being pursued against a backdrop of growing concern over road safety, particularly incidents involving DTC and cluster buses. Data released by the city government indicates that public transport vehicles were involved in a notable number of accidents in the past reporting period, including several fatal collisions attributed to factors such as speeding, inconsistent lane discipline and delayed responses to events.
The investment in the ATS reflects a broader commitment to improve Delhi's urban transport ecosystem through technology-driven solutions. By strengthening traffic control and surveillance capabilities, authorities aim to reduce response times to on-road incidents and improve traffic flow, supporting safer travel for commuters. The integration of data from the ATS with emergency management systems is expected to reinforce coordination among response agencies and contribute to a more resilient urban mobility framework.
Officials have reiterated that the development forms part of a comprehensive plan to modernise transport infrastructure in the capital while addressing longstanding concerns about road safety and operational efficiency in one of India's busiest urban environments.
